Rough Guide or Lonely Planet

Hi

I am wanting to buy a travel guide for South America however when I was in Egypt a few people I was travelling with had a Rough Guide rather than a lonely planet - does anyone have any comments or feedback on which one is better and why? They tended to say that the Rough Guide goes into more detail?

My personally have only ever used Lonely Planet. I would be looking at getting a guide for all of South America.
