Huanchaco is a small seaside town that is located about 30mins outside of the city of Trujillo. Me & Jin decided to stay here to be at the beach and take a slower pace than city centre.
Where I stayed: Oceano hostel S/.30 night for a twin room wifi, hot shower, towels & soap provided. Also roof terrace with a washing line perfect for drying laundry!
They were renovating the hostel when we were there as they are putting a kitchen in which would make it even better value.
We did look at a couple of other hostels the next day but the only cheaper one we could find was Mamacocha & it looked pretty dirty so we decided to pay the extra S/.5 ea & keep our clean private room!
What I ate: Set menu in a small restaurant next to pizzeria - on a side street back from the seafront. S/.6 for soup, drink & a breaded chicken with rice and salad.
Brought a tomale (ground maize, chicken and olive wrapped in a banana leave) from.the market S/.1 ea & some bananas 8 for S/.2
The 2nd evening we got ripped off

Sunset over the pier at a bbq stand getting a chicken kebab for S/.5! We thought she said 1.50. Then had some deep fried cakes that are like funnel cakes apparently S/.3 we shared them between 3.
What I did: So after walking half the town looking for a hostel we took a walk along the seafront to watch the sunset & then around the town to find where the market was & get food. Then it was an early night after an exhausting days travelling!
2nd day we decided to visit Chan Chan ruins which are back towards Trujillo. We got a bus for S/.1 which drops you at the turn off. The walk to the ruins is about 1.5km but it is flat.
It cost S/.10 entry but that includes 3 sets of ruins & a museum. The ruins are interesting to look around but there is not much information.
We then walked back to the road & whilst taking a break to decide our next move we were joined by a girl from California who had actually been in our hostel in Cuenca but left our 1st night (I didn't get her name!). So we all decided
to walk to the museum which is about 10mins heading towards town.
I would definitely recommend going here as it explains all about Chan Chan ruins & makes everything a lot clearer.
We then decided to head into town rather than do another ruin & caught a combi for S/.1.
We asked for pariso & were dropped near the main square.
The central square is very nice & there is a McDonald's! We stopped here for icecream & I got a banana split mcflurry which was amazing.
After our junk food fix we took a walk around the more historical side of Trujillo & bumped into a Catholic celebration of some sort (1st Octobe?) which involved carrying a huge platform around!
We then headed back to the street we got dropped off at & back to Huanchaco in a combi for S/.1.50.
Next Stop: Hiking central Huaraz!
