After all the border formalities between Ecuador and Peru we arrived on Peru soil at 5pm on Saturday evening. We could already feel the change in weather and could see the mosquitos looking for my blood!!! Once through the border our bus was bound for Tumbes where we had to change for a combi bus to Mancora. In tumbes we had to get a Tuk Tuk to the combi which then took around 2 hours to reach Mancora.
When we arrived at Mancora it was dark so it was hard to judge what the place was like. The only thing we could tell is that we had not really arrived in Peru but some little gringo filled surfers home. One bad point is that we arrived at election time and for some reason that meant most of the hostels we tried were full!! Another odd fact is that the government dont allow the sale of alcohol when its election time so we couldnt get a beer anywhere. We eventually found a nice hostel overlooking the beach. It was cheap (15 soles each) and we were tired so we stayed put there for the night. We went out for dinner to a
little beach shack and chilled out for the evening!
The next day we decided to see if there was anywhere else that would be worth staying and we found La Pousada just at the end of the beach. Thankfully here you can camp for less than half the price of the current hostel so we packed our bags again, jumped in a Tuk Tuk and were brought to our new hostel.
That afternoon we decided to see what all the fuss was about with all the surfers and gave it ago. We both got a lesson for 45soles ($15). It was quite fun actually. The instructor shows you how to stand and helps at the beginning with the board. He brings you out to a wave and tell you to paddle. Then when he says go you try and stand up on the board. On the second try I had it and was all the way into the shore and then a few times after.
That evening we went out for a cheap dinner and found an off license who sold us beer to bring back to the hostel. We chilled out and headed to bed!
The next day we
decided to try the surfing without the instructor but this prived to be quite difficult as we arrived when the big waves did. I think we fought with a few waves before deciding to give it a rest. Last night we went out to a pizza place and a chilled out with some Chileans and an American in the hostel.
We were going to stay another day here and get another surfing lesson but we have decided to head further south to a city called Huaraz and do some trekking there in the mountains. OUr bus leaves at 5.30 and by the time we arrive tomorrow in the national park it will probably be 16 hours travelling!
