Day 8 - Lesmahagow to Peru Today was a day of travelling. Lots of it. We had to say farewell to the towns and village nestled amongst the beautiful Cordillera Blanca mountains and head back to Lima in our now 14 seater plane. It was a clear, clear morning and the views of the snowcapped mountains all around and below us were simply stunning. And so it was back to Lima - at least the airport, as we had a flight later in the afternoon to Iquitos. And like most aiports the world over, the waiting around was as exciting as watching paint dry. Thankfully there was a supply of doughnuts and coffee in the food court. We said farewell to one of our group who had come over primarily for the opening and inauguration of ... read more

Let me tell you this story about our Amazon cruise from Iquitos Peru to Leticia Columbia. I was hired for seven days to guide a family from Poland down the Amazon River as far as the border. My clients were having a real adventure that started in the Andes at one of the so called sources of the Amazon River. To finish their adventure they were to flush out into the Atlantic Ocean nearly 4,000 miles from where they started. They called their adventure url=http://dawnontheamazon.com/blog/2008/02/08/an-amazon-cruise-to-determine-the-longest-river-in-the-world/ The Amazon Challenge and that will be the name of their book. They gave me special instructions. Make sure there is one bottle of good whiskey…per day. I laid in a case of Jack and we were ready. We stopped off at a place I know where a guy keeps a ... read more

Hola from the Jungle, Today is Thursday 24 January - my second last day in Peru. Today was a pretty incredible day!! Was up v early again and out of the hotel at 6am. After a moto taxi trip across Iquitos to the harbour, we stood at the edge of the Amazon and washed the Vine Trust's 'Amazon Hope 2' sail up the river towards us. The VT support Scripture Union Peru in their work with the street boys and also with their medical work. Part of the medical support included provision of two ships (Amazon Hope 1 & 2) built in Scotland and sailed across to Peru. The ships sail up the Amazon river with a team of qualified medical volunteers and provide medical support to people who live in the remote villages further up ... read more

Hi Folks, Apologies again for lack of entries. I am now back in the UK and had my first day back at work today, so trying hard to play catch up!! I still have three days to write up and then probably some thoughts at the end. Today I'm on Wednesday 23 January. Day started pretty early as we were up for an early morning flight. We were leaving Huaraz in Ancash (in the mountains) to head out to the jungle. The jungle is one place that I hadn't visited, so needless to say I was pretty excited about getting there and experiencing it. I still didn't get to see the snowy mountains which were (again) shrouded in cloud, so had to make do with the postcards I bought as a reminder!! Some of our group ... read more

You can not compare the Great Amazon River Raft Race with any other competition in the world. Over 118 miles on balsa logs tied together with jungle vines, on a primitive raft you build yourself, on the largest river, surrounded by the largest rainforest. It could only be possible in Iquitos, Peru, the most isolated, remote, jungle town. Imagine yourself and three friends working as a team on a small cork, bobbing downstream, dodging snags, maneuvering around filters, trying to find the strongest current, dense impenetrable rainforest shimmering with a thousand shades of green on both sides. You are three degrees south of the equator. The tropical sun tries to boil your brains. Piranhas wait to nibble your toes. Are those buzzards circling overhead? You paddle as hard as you can but a raft full of ... read more

We arrived in Iquitos, in the Peruvian Amazon Basin, late the next evening, and whizzed around the centre in a little moto-taxi with open sides as the full force of a tropical storm unleashed itself around us. The plan was to get a boat up the Amazon from Iquitos to Leticia, in Colombia, and cross the border off the beaten track, spending a memorable New Year on a boat with hundreds of Peruvians and two toilets. Unfortunately, though hardly unsurprising, no one wanted to work over the New Year period, preferring instead to sit on the docked boats in the mud, drinking home-brew liquor. So we had to spend December 31st in Iquitos, wandering around the centre, drinking beer, opening then refusing to drink revolting Peruvian "champagne", setting off fireworks in a crowd, staring guiltily as ... read more

I am going to take you behind the scenes of the Amazon Animal Orphanage and Pilpintuwasi Butterfly Farm in Iquitos Peru. Most people know a little bit about the Butterfly Farm. I have earned my insights studying and photographing at the Butterfly farm. First, let me introduce you to the cast of characters: Tony Piraña thinks she is the star of the show at the Butterfly Farm. Tony is a White-fronted Capuchin Monkey, raised by street children in Iquitos Peru. Capuchins are considered to be the smartest monkeys in Central and South America, with many documented cases of habitual tool use. Tony uses tools. She uses sweaty gringos for salt licks, supplementing her diet with daily mineral licks. She is a talented pick pocket and a good photographer. Keep one hand on your camera and the ... read more

I know its been too long, but there are reasons for no entries. Ive been busy and having fun. And when I wrote this entry before, a huge rainstorm in Santa Marta, Colombia flooded the streets and knocked out all of the power erasing pages of writing (I had been saving it as well, but when I got back online all was gone) Anyway, when I left you all last time I was on a journey to the jungle. That journey was long, but worth the wait. Natalie and I spent hours on buses and two days on a cargo boat before we reached Iquitos. On the way we visited large and small towns, toured the markets, and bought sunglasses, and even had a fashion show of our own on the bus. We went from the ... read more
