Yes, finally updating the travel blog! So far the trip has gone quite smoothly. I will be doing multiple entries today in order to catch up.

The flights to Lima were good. Detroit to Newark smooth, and Newark to Lima we were quite excited to get the emergency row. That is, until we boarded and realized that the emergency row seats do not recline. Ugh. For a 7.5 hour trip not quite as comfortable as one would think. The line to process passports was slow - 45 minutes to pass through, then on to pick up the luggage. I was watching the 3 gates to pass through with luggage - in Lima you push a button - red light means you have to go through a customs search. Green light means you can simply pass through and leave the luggage area and head toward your destination. While Lloyd and the kids picked up the luggage I scoped out the gates, and decided that the first gate seemed like a good choice, especially since I saw two red lights just before we entered the line. Sure enough, we were lucky enough to get green so through the door we went. We

were met by our taxista from the hostal, holding a sign with our name - he was a welcome sight at 11 pm. The Lima airport certainly has improved with this renovation - it is actually quite beautiful. However out front there is quite a bit of construction as a new hotel is being built right at the airport. We had to walk and roll our bags quite a distance to our awaiting car. The trip from the airport to the hostal was a brief 25 minutes. The kids enjoyed recognizing the signs of commercial businesses such as Pizza Hut and McDonalds (how sad).

The hostal El Patio is located in Miraflores, a nice area of Lima that focuses on restaurants, shopping, artists, etc. The rooms were unique, and ours was one of the suites in order to accommodate the 4 of use. It reminded me of my grandmother’s house, tile beckoning to the 50s. Our room was away from the street, beds comfortable, bathroom clean - we couldn’t ask for more. The staff was very accommodating, and our taxista arranged to pick us up the next morning to take us back to the Lima airport for our flight to Cusco. The hostal had a beautiful patio (hence its name) you can see in the photos. We had a nice continental breakfast in the morning - breads, teas, coffee, and check out the size of the banana. It may have been small, but it was tasty!
