Miraflores
Restaurant on the beach Friday 23rd September
We are sitting at the airport now awaiting our flight to Guayaquil. We will stay 2 nights there before flying to the Galapagos Islands. We think we have arranged a pretty decent cruise in Galapagos, and the last minute deals enable us to upgrade from tourist grade to a
luxury grade catamaran for about the same price. Lets hope so anyway.
Lima was the stop over we needed to charge our batteries. We booked a wonderful apartment in Miraflores for 5 days, which of course enabled us to cook every night. We have really missed that, so a good feed of steak and veg, pasta and garlic bread have left us feeling almost normal again. Our apartment also has a private elevator that opens directly on to our front door!
We only spent one day in Lima City itself wandering around and looking at all the notable landmarks, but other than that, we have spent the rest of the time around Miraflores walking along the coast or looking about the centre.
I accidentally got hit by a car today - well a car door anyway. I was walking along minding my own business and this lady
Lima
Lima Plaza opened her car door on to the side of my leg and it catches the side of my knee. I dont know who was more surprised, her or me! Nice bruise.
Shane says: I told Sharls heaps of times not to walk on the road in front of the bank, but to no avail. She was walking along in front of the bank and BANG, bruises and some.
Sharls says: Oh thats right, his concern was overwhelming. "Oh my god, how many times have I told you to walk on the path, hey, how many times?" Mind you I recall he was right behind me and also not walking on the footpath when said incident occurred! lol
One of the small art galleries here was showing the Balgo Exhibition - a collection of beautiful Indigenous Australian art. So here we are, 2 Australians, fluffing about as proud as punch when I tell the guard there that we are also from Australia. He is very impressed:-)
Balgo (Wirrimanu) is one of Australias most remote settlements with Darwin 900km to the North and Alice Springs 800kms south east. Balgo is sited on the Dreaming path of Luurnpa the
Ancestral Kingfisher deep in the Western Desert where the Great Sandy Desert and the Tanami Deserts meet.
The painters from Balgo includes a generation of tribal elders who grew up in a context of customary tribal law, initiation and living from the land. Their youth was spent as nomadic hunter-gatherers of the harsh Western Desert under strict traditional law. This is what they paint today- a contemporary range of stories that demonstrates the strong connection Aboriginal people have with their traditions and the ways those traditions are celebrated and maintained today.
Lima centre itself is a beautiful collection of period buildings in the Plaza, however
outside of this, it is busy and noisy like any other city.
Shane says: Luxury apartment, luxury yacht in 'The Galapagos'. What is this girl doing to me? I'm a backpacker, Sharl's is definitely a flashpacker. You should have seen the apartment, 3 bedrooms, 4 toilets, 4 LCD's TV's, own lift to the room. 24 hour concierge. 2
streets from the beach. It was magnificent though. haha. She is costing us a fortune.
Great stop off to recharge. Walks along the beach, a couple of bottles of red. Alright 3 bottles but
Miraflores
Our apartment who is counting? Home cooked meals. A curry. All good!
Sharls says: Actually Sixto, it was cheaper than staying in a hotel!
So we've had a 5 days stop here and have a 5 day stop in Galapagos and a 5 day stay in the Amazon. Can hardly wait! And I'm counting Sixto - I need new runners!
Shane says: Yeah, you cant wait because its 5 star, followed by 5 star folowed by 5 star !
Sharls says: Well I wouldnt want him to drown in the Galapagos or get eaten alive by a Boa Constrictor in the jungle would I????? mwahahaha
Shane says: I know what you and Simone are up too.
