Water features at the nearby park
I so wanted to dip my feet in there....but too many park staff about....thought I best avoid any trouble! Well my time in Lima is almost up...just when I was becoming an expert road crosser it is time to say farewell to the traffic, noise & pollution (not sad about the last one!).
I took the opportunity of an early rise to go and visit the local park and pick up some supplies for the bus journey.
Peruvians do like their plazas and parks. They are always well utilised....lots of school / college kids seem to frequent them either before or maybe even during their classes...I guess there are worse things to be doing other than bunking off!
This park had lots of water features that I was truly tempted to soak my feet in....it is another scorcher of a day and my skin is still feeling rather hot after yesterday´s baking! But due to the amount of park staff through out I decided it was probably wise to avoid any trouble on my last morning here.
Which brings me to the point of there always being lots of people about working away...either sweeping the streets, selling everything and anything (from food snacks, to juice, to toilet roll, to bags the list just goes
on and on....) amongst the traffic chaos or pruning plants in the park. There is a sense of everyone is busy in a laid back kinda way and they just get on with it....there is a strange serenity about it all!
Two unexpected highlights this morning
1. I met an older peruvian gentleman during one of my road crossings who asked me where I was from. When I responded Scotland he mentioned the St Andrews blue and white cross flag. Then he asked me if I spoke any other languages other than English, to which I responded Greek and very little French....and would you believe it he spoke to me in Greek!!! Yes it is one of the 11 languages he can speak...now that puts my lack of Spannish to shame and I promise to make an effort to use my phrase book extensively over the next few weeks.
2. On the way back from the park towards the shops I saw my first ever live demonstration in Lima. It was a sea of nurses in blue with megaphones and traffic police protecting the public or should I say protecting the nurses from the angry
Demonstration of nurses
My first live demonstration in Lima 30/05/12 drivers who were stopped in the traffic! I knew these demonstrations take place frequently however I never thought I would witness one in the flesh on my last morning here!
Yesterday I tried my first Inca Kola and it tasted good (thankfully nothing like Pisco Sour!)...i would describe the taste like a less fizzy version of iron bru but in a bright yellow colour! This was definitely on my shopping list of things to pick up at the local VEA supermarket.
During my visit to the shopping mall I could not resist taking a photo of the mall security guard on his toy...it tooked so cool!
In a nutshell my impressions of Lima - I thought I would find the poverty and animals roaming around heart breaking, when in reality it is truly awe inspiring.
I have truly enjoyed my time in Lima and I would thoroughly recommend anyone visiting to take the time and stay a day or two you wont be dissappointed!
Until the next update take care
P.S. As you are starting to realise these blog entries will not provide you with a historic or
Hostel & traffic
A picture of my home in Lima for my 3 nights here...plus the traffic tailback as a result of the demonstration cultural insight of Peru. I am not very big on either plus you can always read a book or watch a documentary to gain the true facts. I am more about just enjoying being somewhere and gaining a sense of what a place feels like via the souroudings and it´s people. This trip also serves the purpose of being a much deserved break from work (sorry for those of you reading this at work) and daily routine. I am definitely packing lots in but at the same time taking the time to chill out and just be in the moment...these blogs are serving as note memoir for me.
