Mona Lisa street art
You don´t see this every day! Well my sleep pattern has returned almost back to normal, had 7.5hrs uninterrupted sleep, which is great....obviously all the walking is doing the trick! My 10 bed dorm had only 4 of us in it last night, so it was less stuffy than the previous night when all 10 beds were occupied. I am getting used to the luke warm water in the showers and remembering to avoid flushing the toilet paper down the loo....progress!
Observations
1. Constant traffic noise, the amusing bit is that a number of vehicles have an ambulance / police sounding horn / alarm in a vain attempt to get through the traffic.....not sure how successful that is proving considering how many vehicles have exactly the same sound system!
2. Very few smokers on the streets....which is making walking in the centre a much more pleasant experience than Edinburgh
3. To make up for the lack of smokers there is lots of car pollution, so at times it feels as if someone has got a car or truck exhaust over your mouth & nose (it will just make me appreciate the clean air of Cusco even more!)
4. Peruvians love to eat
Tattoo shops every where
It is not every day that my tattoo´s are an acceptable topic of conversation....but apparently here I am one of the locals! Despite this still not tempted to get one here... lots of meat and chips and they are big on the fast food (McDonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut) however they are all slender....it is hard to believe!
5. At 5ft 5in I feel above average height....it reminds me of being at a Rasmus gig....I have great visibility where ever I go, not something that happens often back home
Yesterday was Sunday and I was surprised by the amount of traffic and places opened....I thought it would have been a bit more quiet...but then again in a city of 8 million they have to go somewhere?
During dinner I tried my first ever Pisco Sour and after a couple of mouthfuls it certainly will be my last....despite my love of all things alcoholic, I have finally found something I dislike as much as whisky and ouzo....Kirsty at least I tried! I also sampled a couple of local meat dishes - majolitas and panceta (I have not got the notebook so not sure if these words even resemble what i actual eat?) - no idea what they were (will need to google them with correct spelling) however the tomato sauce that came with them helped abit however pleased to
say i was not grossed out...I even finished the full plate (obviously all the walking is ensuring my appetite is not suprressed)!
Within 10 mins of walking through one of the shopping streets full of tourists and peruvians alike, i was quickly targeted by a couple of tattooist´s touts who quickly gave me cards to their business and tried in vain to get me to have a tattoo to remind me of Peru (you see Dad it just proves that I can be sensible when I want to and that i am sticking to my promise of no tattoo´s while in Peru!). One of them very kindly said I must have had my first tattoo when I was a baby since I could not possible be more than 25! I LOVE PERUVIAN PEOPLE!!!! Needless to say their ability to flatter a fragile ego is a massive hit with me.
I spent the first few hours yesterday visiting the 2 main plazas in central Lima and the afternoon visiting the affluent district of Miraflores (it reminded me of the Singapore gated complexes).
First impressions
Lima is noisy but full of character, i am
so glad i decided to stay here for a few days.
Run down but at the same time it has a charm about it.....I guess the optimist in me is always going to see the best in everything! There have been some fantastic street art or graffiti the mona lisa being one of the highlights.
I am heading out of Lima for a night but will be back tomorrow....will send another blog in the next couple of days
Until then take care
P.S. Apologies for all the typos, no surprise I can´t seem to work out the spell check! At least I found the @ sign on the keyboard....just taking a small step at a time!
