I only spent a morning in Lima, and it was about what I expected. I walked around for a couple of hours (mostly in the San Isidro area) and aside from the horrid traffic, it didn´t seem too bad.

The skyscrapers are all banks; there must be some lenient laws in place for so many to be headquartered here. These, along with Miraflores and other wealthier, polished areas, give the illusion of wealth. All it takes is a bus trip outside of these areas to see this is not the case for the masses.

If you know someone here who can take you to restaurants and bars outside of the tourist areas, or if you´re looking to shop cheaply, or if you care to see some museums, cathedrals, statues, and squares, Lima might be worth a deeper look. I have no regrets, though, and the common narrative in the travel community is to get in and out, quickly.
