Day 62-66
6th-10th November
With our Amazon journey over we were taken back down the river in the morning. Although we’d had amazing weather for the previous 3 days, it had now decided to pour it down and it wasn’t until we were nearing Puerto Maldonado that I realised water had been running down from the roof of the boat onto me and it now looked like I had wet myself. Excellent! We were taken to the airport and checked our things in, then realised the plane was delayed....very delayed. Apparently very common during the rainy season but that doesn’t mean we were very happy about it! Eventually it arrived and we flew first to Cusco and then to Lima (does anywhere actually do direct flights??). First impressions of Lima? Pretty ugly to be honest! It certainly doesn’t win the prettiest city award, but never mind, we were there to chill out and get ready to head to La Senda Verde, the animal refuge we were volunteering at in Bolivia.
So that was pretty much our time in Lima, we’d decided to fly to La Paz, as the thought of spending 2 days on a bus to get
there just did not appeal, therefore we actually spent 4 nights in Lima instead of 2. We had to move hostels after the first 2 nights as it was full and it was pretty cool as we moved to a place called the Baranco which was in a nice location and we had a view of the ocean. We did a lot of washing as our stuff was pretty grim after being sweated on in the jungle, did some blogging and a lot of chats on skype. We also wandered around Lima a bit. It is basically a non descript city with a nasty reputation of being bad to gringos. Nothing happened to us while we were there, but it was the only place where we were actively warned about crimes against tourists so we were quite careful. I also tried to book plane tickets for La Paz but the website wasn’t working, so once again we decided to just turn up at the airport on the 10th. This was to turn out to be a massive mistake.
So on the 10th we turned up at the airport and went to buy our tickets. They came to 1500, which
we thought was cheaper than on the website. Until I got the card receipt back. That price was not in Soles, which I’d assumed it would be, us being in Peru and all. It was in freaking US dollars! So 2 flights, which I thought had just cost us 350 Pounds, ended up costing us nearly One Thousand Goddamn Pounds. And there was nothing we could do about it, I was really cross as the woman had only said 1500, and had not said dollars. Ellory had taken our bags over to the check in desk so I walked over to deliver the news. It did not go down well. In fact we were both really hacked off. Yes we had to get to La Paz, but paying such a huge amount of money by accident was not good! So it was in very bad moods we got on the plane and headed back to Bolivia.
Once again we entered Bolivia with no problems, although it was a lot more civilised arriving in the airport instead of crossing the border by bus! We checked into a hotel, headed out to Thai Old Town to get something it eat and
got ready to head down to La Senda Verde the next day.
