So our 15 hour bus journey took us 21 hours!! Apart from 2 hours sitting at the side of the road from 10pm thinking the driver was just wanting to watch the film, as he had come to sit in the seat over the aisle from me, however at the end of the film he announced that we could expect a new bus in 20 minutes but apart from this there is no apparent reason for why this bus took so long. All I do know is that by the end of the journey both Sharon and I were ready to get off....
Once at the bus depot we jumped into a taxi and 15 minutes later we were in the desert oasis Hacachina! Bags dumped we went and sat at the poolside bar and had some well deserved beers. The rest of the day was uneventful. Next morning and we wandered around the lagoon that is central to Huacachina. We soon found a restaurant serving breakfast and so we both splashed out and had the biggest pancakes filled with fruit and covered in chocolate with a freshly ground coffee on the side for me. Pancakes demolished (it took awhile
they were that big) we went in hunt of a dune buggy and sandboarding tour.
I am sure Sharon will admit she was never big on the idea but since I had done things I wasn't too bothered about on the trip she would come along. If you ask her now she will openly admit that it was some of the best fun we have had whilst out here! We ended up on the tour with two South American families with 3 children between them. So we got into the dune buggy and got strapped in and soon set off. Once we had left the town and got into the dunes the fun started and we literally went flying around the dunes. It was like being on a rollercoaster so needless to say I was loving it and laughing my head off most of the way around.
We eventually came to a stop and the sandboards came out. The sandboards are like a snowboard however the bindings aren't as secure. Our driver didn't give us the option of trying it standing up but made us lie down telling us to keep our elbows tucked in and feet stuck
out behind us to act as breaks. He then stood to one side and gave you a push down the sand dune..... I think the video speaks for itself in relation to how much Sharon enjoyed herself. Unfortunately we only got to go down three sand dunes before it was time to get back in the buggy and go for a further ride around before heading back to Hacachina.
If you ever get the chance to sandboard do it! After speaking to other people in the hostel it transpired that if you lie down on the board you go faster than if you try to stand. So take note for any future sandboarding venture you may do!!
The rest of the afternoon was spent chilling by the pool where I braved a brief dip - the pool wasn't heated and so it was cold hence the brief dip!! That evening whilst enjoying our pre-dinner beer we were joined by a three guys staying at the hostel. Two of them headed off to have the bbq served by the hostel, we had eaten there the night before and knew from experience it wasn't great so steered clear. Anyway we
ended up being joined by a Brazilian guy who had lived in London for 10 years (his name escapes me at the minute...). Having established that Sharon and I weren't lesbians but us also making it clear he had no chance with either of us we ended up having a good laugh with him and after the meal we all headed up onto the sandune at the side of the hostel however got about half way up and gave up as it was too much like hardwork!! After another beer on the hostel we said our goodnights.
Monday morning we were up and out of the hostel early as we didn't have any bus tickets nor did we know the time of the bus to get us to Lima so we could pass through and get to Trujillo our next planned stop. Thankfully we were early and so were able to get on the first bus to Lima and also book our onward tickets with a 9 hour layover in Lima. Our brief visit to Lima will appear in the next blog!
