That may seem like a bit of a bizarre title for an entry about a trek to Machu Picchu, but being as this is what our guide, Pio, insisted on calling me for the entirity of the trek, I thought it kind of appropriate. So in answer to the poser at the end of my last entry, yes, I did wake up and drag myself down to wait for our pickup. It was kind of wierd being up and going just as a lot of people from the hostel were getting in from a night out, but thats how it goes sometimes. Day 1: Mollapata - Soraypampa After a sleepy 2 hour ride in a bus, we arrived at Mollapata, which is where the Salkantay trail begins. We stopped for breakfast, and had a chance to ... read more

Hey All! First off, sorry no pics. Cant get them to upload.... I returned from my trekking adventure late 2 nights ago (friday night)... I went on a 5 day trek thoughout the Andes, called Salkantay trek. Judith Patrick and I booked through a travel agency here in Cuzco called AmericanFox, I'm not sure I'd book with them again for those of you that might be reading this..... Day One (October 6, 2008) It began at around 4am when Guido, the guide picked Judith Patrick and I up from "the Point," our hostel. The night before I was contemplating what would be best to pack, while maintaining a lightweight bag... therefore I think I over worried myself and didnt sleep the best. The van picked us up along with the 14 others that we would be ... read more

My wife and I recently hiked the Salkantay Trail to Machu Picchu without a guide. The Peruvian government has now made it a requirement to pay an entrance fee to hike the Salkantay trail. We managed to avoid the fee. Here are some tips on how to hike the trail without a guide, and how to avoid the fee. A Few Things to Keep in Mind 1. Hiking in the high altitude (15,000ft) with 30+ pounds of weight on your back is VERY difficult. You will feel like you're going to die, but you probably won't..... so it's all good. 2. Running water is abundant along the hike, so you can easily purify water along the way. Gas for the new high tech camping stoves that they sell at EMS (JetBoil etc.) is not readily available ... read more

Some of you I know watch the HBO Comedy Flight of the Conchords. It is a hilarious show about two musicians from New Zealand living in NYC and they frequently break out into ridiculous songs about virtually nothing. On their first show, the first song they sung was about a pretty girl at a party, titled "The Most Beautiful Girl In the Room." The lyrics described how this girl, who was so pretty she could have "been an air hostess in the sixties" is the most beautiful girl in the room, and could be in the top three most beautiful women on the street, "depending on the street." She could be a model, but only a "part time model" that would probably need to keep a day job. The point to this rambling you ask? The ... read more

Salkantay Trail - If in doubt, follow the mule poo!Which is exactly what we did given that our rogue guide had a habit of disappearing on us.....lucky for us, our mules were kind enough to leave their plops behind like a personalised breadcrumb trail. Over the the 4 day trek, it was an assault on all of our senses and a test of patience, stamina and how long you could hold your breath at altitude whilst visiting the 'hole in the ground´toilet. But it was one of the best experiences we´ve had to date and one that we'll never forget. As a group of 7 trekkers, we nicknamed ourselves the '7 dwarves´and debated the allocation of each drawf characteristic each day depending on our mood (although the 7th dwarf name seemed to escape us, so paul ... read more

"The Salkantay Trek was recently named among the 25 best Treks in the World, by National Geographic Adventure Travel Magazine. This amazing trek runs beneath the magnificent Salkantay mountain (6.271m/20569ft), one of the highest and most stunning in the Peruvian Andes. The first two days are dominated by the impressive "Apus" of Salkantay and Huamantay, in the high puna landscape. On the third day you descend to the warm cloud forest, to reach Aguas Calientes on the fourth day. The impressive Sacred Inca city of Machupicchu is visited on the last day of the program." Again this was an early start for us, leaving at 4.30am to travel to Mollepata where we had some breakfast of bread and chicken burgers (!) which we ate out in a garden surronded by some very plucky, hungry, brave chickens ... read more

After a couple of days in Cusco acclimatising to the altitude, recovering from passport related trauma, and stocking up on tacky souvenirs, we set off on the Salkantay trail across the Andes towards Machu Picchu. We had a great group of co trekkers and were lucky to have an excellent guide and a cook who was a genius at creating fantastic food using only a camping stove and any unfortunate chickens who happened to cross his path! The first day we hiked up a few thousand metres which was knackering in the heat and altitude. We arrived at our campsite at the base of the Salkantay mountain more than ready to hit the tents. We were up at 5am the next day to begin the climb up to the highest point, around 4600m, which was again ... read more

Im now in Peru- I spent a couple of days in Lima which to be honest I found a bit boring as there is very little to do there but then I moved on to Cusco which was completely different. Myself and a lovely Dutch girl (Hester) who I met at the airport organised to go on a 5 day Salkantay to Machu Picchu trek so after a couple of days of manic cold weather gear shopping we set off on the 18th. We had quite a large group- myself, Hester, a French lady, 4 Asian Americans, an American Mother and Daughter and 7 Spaniards but it was an excellent group as everyone got on together really well (which is a good job really!) The first two days of the trek were full 9hr assents with ... read more
