We arrived in Cuzco and were immediately swarmed by people trying to drag us in every direction. We hopped in a cab and headed for the plaza where we found a nice hostel. The next day we visited a couple of agencies that do the Inca Trail and eventually settled on Extreme Tourbulence Tours for $220 per person which I would definitely recommend. During most of the year you have to reserve your spot months in advance but December is slow so we were able to find one leaving in two days.

Cuzco is a beautiful colonial city similar to Antigua. It is filled with people in the streets trying to sell you something. You cant walk more than a half a block without someone getting in your face which gets annoying. We bought hiking boots, rain panchos, and other miscellaneous stuff for the hike.
