Day 1 - Going down (into the pit) My guide, Edger, meet me at the hotel at about 1am. We caught a taxi to the bus station. From there we caught a bus to Cabanaconde at the foot of the Canyon. The trip lasted about 6 hours and got fairly rough the closer we got to Cabanaconde. Once in Cabanaconde we did some quick shopping to buy food for the next two days. The guys here wear western style cowboy hats, which I hadn’t seen much in the other parts of Peru. Once this was all done we set off for the canyon proper. Colca Canyon is generally accepted to be the second deepest canyon in the world. It is only beaten by Cotahuasi canyon which is a more remote Peruvian canyon. However a recent Polish ... read more

After arriving in Arequipa a city of 1 million we found ourselves a nice hotel for around 8 pounds a night - fully equipped with Cable TV and excellent shower. First point of call was coffee and black jungle cake sitting in a cafe overlooking the central plaza. Life is relaxing at the moment. Some nice Italian food followed by a comfy bed. It was time to do some more exercise. We joined a guide and rather controversially a French guy and set off early the following morning to the base of the volcano El Misti. Our plan was a two day ascent of this 5822m mountain which overlooks the city of Arequipa. Starting at 3400m we set off at a crawling snail pace. Within a hundred meters James was getting annoyed but held back. ... read more

After getting back to Arequipa, Laurence and myself chilled out for a couple of days before heading off to the Colca Canyon with Ysabel’s father Walter. Unfortunately during this “chill out” period Laurence become a little bit ill and by the time we reached the Colca was looking rather pale indeed. It was ok though as I reassured Walter that Laurence was not going to die and everything would be fine. It was a really fascinating trip where we saw Walter’s family’s land and searched out the hidden treasures of the Colca. Unfortunately Laurence didn’t see any of this and saw most of the Colca through the hood of his sleeping bag (it was handy though as he could always guard the car). Walter is a really lovely man and I think he quite enjoyed looking ... read more

after the flight and the transfer to the hotel was quite late afternoon and we hadn´t had lunch yet so we went and ate at a place on the plaza de arms (main square). we had empanadas which are kinda like pastys filled with either cheese or meat. had a bit of a walk round before veging out in the hotel before all going out for tea together. we went to a place which matt our tour leader suggested which was really nice but quite posh except they make you wear really silly huge paper bibs!!! it was relatively expensive for over here but thats actually not much in pounds. its known for its steak which was what we decided to go for, a trio of beef, alpaca and ostrich. the steak came out on a ... read more

5:30am. Got up and departed for Colca Canyon. Long and bumpy ride passing grandiose landscape. Never seen that much variation of terrain. Huge and barren mountains followed by deep and steep valleys. Many terraced farmlands at the foot of mountains but often ended by valleys. 8:50am. Arrived at Colca Canyon. It’s said that there was a long debate over where this was the world’s deepest at 3191m and recently it has drawn in a close second to the neighboring canyon, which is all of 163m deeper, That was so deep that I felt dizzy staring at the bottom. The tour guide said “ You have free time till 10:00am. I advise you to come to this spot at 9:20am if you want to see condors” I laughed thinking ‘ HaHa, Right, as if condors have watches.’ ... read more

This week in South America, we have been mostly... travelling by bus. In just over seven days, we´ve covered well over 1000 miles and spent something like 40 hours on board. (Almost as long as we´ve spent on the lav, but that´s another story.) And tomorrow, when we ship out of Peru and head for Bolivia, we´ve got another 14 hours of the same to look forward to. Can´t wait. All Peruvian bus journeys are different but somehow the same. Long-haul or short-hop, your journey always seems to take longer than you ever imagined it could. There are always too few seats for the number of people on board, sometimes at a ratio of one to two. The buses play either mad Peruvian music or badly dubbed American videos loud enough to make your backside bleed, ... read more

Arequipa is a lovely city. You can´t go 10 steps in Cusco without being accosted or hassled to buy things or go on tours or eat in restaurants. Here you might be asked if you´d like to try a restaurant in the main square, but that´s about it. The place is generally full of people going about their own business. Cusco was wonderful though and we are still missing the place, but the atmostphere is a little calmer here. We spent our first few days being very lazy tourists. We ended up staying in a slightly nicer hostal than usual (Torres de Ugarte - highly recommended) where we got a fantastic hot shower and cable TV in our room. We spent most of our time lazing on the bed and watching the film channels in between ... read more

Hey everyone- I just arrived from my trip to Arequipa and the Colca Canyon. After a pretty tough ride home from Lake Titicaca I decided to take a flight. I could have either chosen a 10-12 hour ride on the bus or a 30 min. flight. It wasn't too hard to chose! I really loved Arequipa. There were several neat things to do and it had a unique European flavor. The plaza de armas and nearby buildings were all painted white. (a.k.a. "The White City"). The first day I visited an incredibly interesting museum featuring a well preserved mummy. Juanita, the Ice Princess, was a 12-14 year-old girl sacrificed by the Incas 500 years ago on the peak of a volcano. She was perfectly preserved, organs intact, by a large glacier that was later melted by ... read more
