Just a short blog to talk about the teaching I'm doing here, my classes so far, that kind of thing... So... as of this week, I have four different courses. Two at the Anglo and two business classes, and I am very much enjoying all of them. Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays I have classes for one hour and a half in the evening with an advanced group. They are a great bunch. Age ranges are from teens to late thirties, so quite a mixed group. Some are studying at university or are still at school, others have full-time jobs and learn English in their free time. As I have them three times a week I am getting to know their different personalities quite well now and I can have a good laugh with them. Some are ... read more

As of today I have been living and working in Asuncion for a month. Things are good. We are starting to meet more local people, discover nice places to go out. I'd say I'm pretty much orientated as to where all the main places are, where to go, where not to go, that kinda thing. We have our place to live, even if the fridge still does not work, and we all get on great. In the flat, there are four of us; Rose, Steve, Dave and I. I thought I might find it difficult living with other people after living on my own for year, but so far so good :) Dave is amazing... there is never a dull day when Dave is around. We have started a wall of 'Davisms' because he says the ... read more

This past week, I have had a lack of inspiration to write this blog. Nothing has jumped out at me as really interesting. Or surprising. Nothing like that. So I will just write about past week I suppose... So its now Monday, I don't know when I last wrote to be honest... I don't think I have mentioned last Saturday, meeting the scariest guy I have ever. Not scary in that he could hurt me, scary in that he should not be let near females. Scary in that, within two hours of meeting, when he was supposed to be on a date with my friend but ignored her, had asked me my opinion on abortion, and if I'd ever have one, told me his grandad or great grandad was a Nazi, used the 'N' word to ... read more

So, as I said in my last post, the transport here in Paraguay deserves a whole blog of its own. After having gone to Cairo, Lima, Marrakesh, Chicargo, the roads here don't seem that busy at all. No strange animals such as llamas or camels in the roads and no huge, mutli-lane roads to navigate across, but it is still an adventure everyday trying to get from A to B. ROADS... So, there are lots of pot holes everywhere! On roads and footpaths, so every journey is extremely bumpy, especially in the residential areas, where the roads are often like the Paraguayan version of a cobbled street, with the odd giagantic tree growing half way out into the road... BUSES... Can be quite confusing! There are many lines, all of which seem to be individually owned. The ... read more

After nearly being in Asuncion for two weeks, certain cultural things have started to stand out. I am going to try and write this as neutrally as possible, so here goes... First of all, something that I was expecting, is that the sense of time here it very different. For example my students don't appear to be worried or concerned about turning up for a class half an hour late, or not turning up at all for that matter. Also, things very often seem to be put off until tomorrow, but then of course, tomorrow never comes. Now these I can live with. I can adapt my use, my idea, of time very easily, and I am quite looking forward to it. Something I am not sure I can get used to is the men here ... read more

This week has seen a few important events, some positive, some negative, lots of ups and downs. UP I had my first class on Wednesday. Teaching mainly adults of a fairly high level. And this appeared to go really well! I was happy with it. My plan went perfectly and everyone participated. My students were friendly and fun. And afterward I was on a massive high, so I went for a GnT. :) UP & DOWN Thursday was my 22nd birthday. It was fun, everyone was great. I got two cakes. You can read the blog about it... At the same time I did miss seeing my friends. DOWN Friday was a massive fail! I realised half an hour before class that I had the wrong book for the level I was teaching and therefore had ... read more

Its my birthday! Part One... So, I wake up with a big gift bag next to me and the taste of gin in my mouth from a quick one at Britannia the night before. I dig out my parcel from Joanna and my card from my mum and open my presents whilest checking my facebook messages, especially liking the Merry Christmas one. Thanks for all the messages by the way people. The big parcel next to me was lovely perfume and other smelly things from Mical, my roomy. :) I got lots of hugs and kisses from the staff at work, although it felt weird having teacher training on my birthday, as I would usually do nothing! The amazing Nora gave me a beautiful purple scarf too. And so far so good - no wobbly moments ... read more

So, I have now been in Asunción for, 6 days, I think, and a very interesting few days they have been. Firstly, when we arrived, we were whisked off to a lovely shopping centre, Mariscal Lopez in Villamora, for lunch and to have a chat with a few staff from the Anglo, which is where we will be working. Afterwards we were taken to the Anglo for a chat with the manager who seems very nice. The Anglo is a great little place. Quite Mediterranean in style. And it was a hot, sunny day too. The next day was 'la dia de la amistad' or friendship day so there was a BBQ with delicious Paraguayan food, sausages, sopa paraguaya (a kind of savory cake I suppose), salads, and an amazing cake with dulce de leche (like ... read more

The Journey Here Well, it´s been 3 weeks already and I´m only now writing my first blog entry. I´m going to say that is because I am so well-accustomed to Paraguayan life! There is a lot of down-time, yet I don´t feel like I am bored or have nothing to do. Ever. Case-in-point: I have been here 3 weeks with no job and have not had time to read more than about 2 pages of the book I brought. I watched about half an hour of The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly a few days ago, and today an hour episode of Glee. Really, that´s about it. I don´t know what I´m doing all the time but my time is occupied. So much so that I am wondering how in the world I will fit ... read more
