It’s impossible not to feel the salt air in all corners of Bahia de Caraquez. The lively little town occupies a peninsula on Ecuador’s west coast, surrounded by the River Chone on one side, the Pacific Ocean on the other, and the estuary where the two meet at the very tip. From the doorstep of our house, for example, sand, warm water and jutting mountains are just a few blocks away in all three directions, and views to both bodies of water line the horizon as I walk down the central street. I can’t believe my own luck that fate twisted our lives this way, and deposited us here at the sunny edge of South America. I say fate because it really seemed to be destiny that brought Keiron and I here at this very moment. ... read more

Sarah enjoyed her new book, Precious, while I tossed and turned in the airplane seat feeling awfully sick on our flight back from the Galapagos. Our plan when we landed was to go to the bus terminal and figure out how to get out of Guayaquil as quickly as possible, although in all likelihood it would have to be the next day since we did not want to show up in a new town at night. We had already spent way too much time in Guayaquil and neither of us really liked Guayaquil. After claiming our bags, we tried walking over to the bus terminal. It is only 1 km away, but the directions we got were not great and we ended up in a cab. The cab arrived at the terminal, but disaster struck shortly ... read more

Today I write in between worlds. From the Guayaquil bus station to be exact, half way between lofty Cuenca and the mellow Pacific coast. These two places couldn't be more different, both in attitude and aesthetic - one is proud and proper, a true colonial city with churches and plazas on every corner; the other is seductively hedonistic, where hippie culture and the party scene colide, and your biggest conundrum of the day is which type of fruity cocktail to order on the beach. Cuenca is a true Beauty. Situated on a small river and adorned with gorgeous architecture, clean cobbled streets and quirky street art, this is the kind of colonial capital I had wanted Quito to be. I spent a lot of my time just wandering around, soaking up the atmosphere. To put the ... read more

We all got watching gripping films on the flight back from The Galapagos to the mainland, but as the three of us (Lisa, Jon and I) were all getting off at Guayaquil to save the 14 hour bus journey from Quito to Montanita we all missed the last 30 minutes... Well, small price to pay hey!!! We dropped lucky with the buses, one was leaving for Montanita in 20 minutes so we jumped on that, which also meant we'd be there before dark... Bonus... With Titanic the film of choice, we settled down to a bit of drama but were soon distracted as after about an hour of the journey we hit the coast and literally cruised by the pacific ocean for the remaining 2 hours....As that film goes on for HOURS.... We obviously missed the ... read more

We arrived in Guayaquil to the main bus terminal about 3:00 in the afternoon. Guayaquil does it right, their bus terminal is gigantic, has a mall and sits right next to the airport. We grabbed some US$ from the ATM (so wild that they use the USD as their currency). In the food court we grabbed some Pizza Hut. Talked to information. Then took a $3 cab ride to the city center. We had the cab driver drop us off near Iglesia San Francisco near the Malacon district, the Miraflores of Guayaquil (aka gringo safe spot). The Malacon recently underwent a massive facelift and is now the nicest part of the city. It is about a 2km long section that hugs the Rio Guayas. The Malacon was quite different than Miraflores. In Miraflores most buildings were ... read more

So this is the entry where you say "screw you man, I don't need to hear about all that sunshine, beaches and surf." But please wait, I promise it wont be one of those entries. Canoa was great but it had it's share of mosquitos, sun burns and locals who like to steal the gringos sandals and laugh because they don't sell anything in that town larger than a size 9.5. However to be honest, I didn't want to leave. Skipping the 2 weeks where we did nothing but enjoy the beaches in Ecuador I will write about where we are now, Peru. We took a big ol' bus from Ecuador through the expansive desert of northern Peru to the capital city of Lima. It was incredible to drive through such a landscape with the ocean ... read more

Selvittiin siis koko yhdeksäntuntinen bussimatka ilman vessavierailuja, mu... read more

Our apologies to anyone who thought we had disappeared over the last few weeks! Lima was a really pleasant city, with a great boardwalk along the side of the ocean with restaurants, shops and entertainment a plenty. In a post Oscars impulse, we ended up going to the cinema to see the Artist the following day which was great because we didn’t need to worry about any dodgy Spanish dubbing, a very nice change! From Lima we were heading north and although we were very ready to get to a beach we had one final city to visit. Trujillo in the North of Peru was in itself not the prettiest town, but it is rightly famous for its pastries and cakes and there are few better things than playing cards in a sunny café with a ... read more

Hello world! It is your lucky day! This blog post is brought to you by none other than the Rummy champion of the Harte household and, dare I say, the WORLD! Yes that’s right folks, it’s Adrianne! Please, please! Applause is not necessary (although it is appreciated). On this beautiful, warm, sunny Friday in Ecuador (suck it, Canadian winter), my family and I had a blissful day of almost complete sloth. My brother and I did nothing but enjoy carbonated beverages, BBC with Spanish commercials, and a lovely swim in the pool. The parental units enjoyed much of the same, plus massages. The Female PU had a massage that she describes as “disturbingly invasive”, a category that appears to be becoming a trend with our vacations (some of our more dedicated readers may remember their massages ... read more

Alright, the first blog of our Central American Adventure. We started the trip by leaving from England and heading across to Madrid before boarding a flight across the altantic, bound for Bogota. We then had to change planes to get to Quito, Ecuador. We had an overnight stopover in Quito, then jumped on our last planes to the ecuadorian coast. Our friend Eddie who we met in Cornwall, had organised a guy to pick us up at the airport and take us to his town, Canoa. The car journey was a couple of hours and the driver didnt speak any English but was keen to tell us about things. So we did as best we could with our spanish phrasebook and Dinis iPhone app "Spanish for Dummies". I reckon we did pretty well for first timers. ... read more
