The "Gold" Church
Before church started, I snuck a picture of the front of the church...just for you guys! Yesterday (6-18)
Being that today was Sunday, you can only assume what I did this morning. Yes, that´s right, I went to church! It was quite an interesting service that lasted from 7 in the morning until 8. My church at home doesn´t even begin worship until 9:30, so you can imagine just how much my sleeping patterns have changed. Or have tried to change. As you can see, I write my blogs late at night, but I wake at 5:30 each morning. The only thing keeping me from passing out is my daily afternoon naptime. Oh, how I miss naptime that I had when I was younger at GSG or when I was in Kingegartin. Then on one wanted to take a nap, but now when you´re older and you could really use...you can´t. That´s why I love the routine schedule here! Naptime is one of the best parts of the day. (besides eating, of course)
Since I couldn´t quite understand the message that was being preached, I brought my own Bible to study in English. The service was held in a very nice church, that had an outer coat of gold on the inside. Since it
Precious
Me with one of my favorite students during English class! :) was a Catholic service, I felt very out of place. And since I was new, semi-white, and sitting with the priest´s family, I drew a lot of attention to myself. Communion was akward because not everyone went up to take bread. About half of the church went up and took a small circle of "bread" with no wine. It was different...but I liked the hymns they sang; they were all very lovely. Overall, it was a good experience, and I´ll be attending church there 7 more times. Hopefully by my last visit, I´ll understand the lecture being preached.
After we hurried home to change, we quickly departed for the beach. We were heading to Las Playas all piled in one car: Jorge Lois driving (Loyola´s son), Señora Loyola in the front, Señor Loyola, me, and Andrea in the middle, and Dora in the back. Along the way, we stopped to grab a bite to eat. I didn´t even realize until I was done with my bowl of soup that I had just eaten shark. Yicks! It kind of freaked me out a little, but as we all know...I´d rather eat a shark than have a shark eat me! So
A las Playas
On the sunny shores of Las Playas. after we ate, we continued on our way. The trip was a little less than an hour, not because of distance or traffic, but because the roads there are very twisted and misleading. It´s a good thing the gas there is so cheap (avg $1.80 per gallon) because Ecuadorians have an extremely complicated road system, and also, because they race from one traffic light to the next before slamming on their brakes at the last minute. But that´s what you have to do, unless you want to be yelled at by other drivers and honked at endlessly. It´s crazy out there on the streets, but it sure is fun!
As for Las Playas, it was BEAUTIFUL! The Loyolas have a house out there as well, so our stay on the beach was private and seculded from other visiters and such. It was a great day to be out on the beach too. It was hot, but there was such a nice breeze blowing in the air. I laid out for about an hour and hot a nice little brooze, so now I need to work on getting rid of those wicked tan lines! I guess I can do that
Crashing Waves
Despite what you may think, the waves in this picture or acutally quite strong. I didn´t go far out, and I was taken under by a huge crashing wave! this weekend when we go the beach.
After a nice stay on the beach, we went back to the beach house to rinse off before stopping to grub on the way home. This time I made sure of what I was eating before scarffing down. I had arroz con camarones, or rice with shrimp. I also had cooked platanos on the side. It was quite delicious and very, very filling!
Well we got home before dark, and after I took a shower, Dora and I talked to Martha (her sister) on line for a little. When we finished talking, we watched a movie. I don´t know what it was called, but it made us cry, it made us laugh, and it was one of the best movies I´ve ever seen! Too bad I don´t even know what it was called, haha. Well, as you can guess that put me in mood to sleep. So to bed I went!
Today (6-19)
I´m both sad and glad to say that today I didn´t do anything more than go to Escuela Semillita! Señora Loyola wasn´t feeling up to par, so she didn´t go out at all
Salamenqueso
Which in other words, would be equivalent to a salamander in English. There are TONS of these everywhere in Ecuador, and you can hear them eating up insects every night. today. And after I got back from school, neither did I. I just lounged around, and, my, was it nice!
At school, I taught 6th grade today. Annnnndddd, what´s really cool is that I got to teach my K-class English too! It was really fun!
When I got home I ate my lunch, picked up my room and bathroom a little, watched another movie, played with the dogs, and talked my adorable boyfriend for a while. My fist completley relaxing afternoon and night. Before I came upstairs to write my blog, I ate KFC with Señor Loyola and Dora. It reminds me so much of being home, in America. I don´t know if that´s good or bad, haha.
I have a lot to look forward to tomorrow: I get to teach 1st grade and 7th, I get to go shopping some more, and the most exciting...ECUADOR PLAYS SOCCER TOMORROW!! ¡VIVE ECUADOR...VAMOS! I have my entire attire laid out and ready for tomorrow. I´ll be sure to take a picture. I´ve got my headband, my earrings, my ring, my bracelet, and my shirt ready to rock-and-roll. Let´s go Ec-ua-dor!!!
Welp, since it´s late, I best be heading off to bed. As you can see, I have a big day ahead of me!
Until next time,
Shir
