Dag 10: Guayaquil

Angela vandaag jarig. GEFELICITEERD !

Vanochtend uitchecken uit ons hotel Crespo te Cuenca. Vandaag gaan we met het vliegtuig naar Guayaquil, zo´n 35 minuten in de lucht. Helaas moeten we 2 uur op de luchthaven wachten totdat het vliegtuig vanuit Guayaquil geland is. Maar dan toch eindelijk. En inderdaad, binnen 40 minuten zijn we op onze volgende plaats van bestemming. Snel met de taxi naar het hotel BW Doral waarna we na het inchecken de stad hebben verkend.
We zijn naar en hebben op Malecon gelopen, een boulevard langs de rivier Guayas. En natuurlijk hebben we een verkoelend biertje gedronken, want het is hier zo´n 27 graden en erg vochtig en dorstig. Dat zijn we niet meer gewend de afgelopen week.
´s Avonds hebben we paella gegeten bij Tasca Vasca. Een spaans restaurant bij ons om de hoek. lekker gegeten.

Certainly the image of a butterfly emerging from its cocoon it too poetic for a city that is the economic engine of the country. However, get caught up in the streams of guayacos wandering the Malecon (the city's riverfront town square-cum-eatery-cum-cultural center) and there's a feeling of a new and proud identity in the air. If Quito's geography and identity is determined by the mountains, then Guayaquil's is influenced by the river. Besides the amusement park-like development along the Rio Guayas, there's the historic barrio of Las Peñas, which perches over the riverfront - looking like a cross between a Mexican and Greek fishing village - and now boasts several happening restaurants and bars.
Guayaquil is the commercial center of the country, with more than half the companies in Ecuador based here, but the city is also beginning to challenge the cultural hegemony of Quito. Apart from shrimp exporting, petroleum refining, food processing and manufacturing, you'll find a theater, film and art scene growing alongside an already lively club and bar scene that's fuelled in part by several large universities.

Malecon 2000
The riverfront promenade is Guayaquil's own Central Park - minus grass but plus a river - and it's where the city comes to shop, eat, stroll and just plain congregate. Malecon 2000, one of the most extensive urban renewal projects in South America, is made up of ponds, playgrounds, sculptures, gardens and river views. From its southernmost point at the Mercado Sur to Cerro Santa Ana and Las Peñas in the north, the Malecon stretches 2.5km along the bank of the wide Rio Guayas. It's a gated, policed public space with restaurants, a museum, performance space, IMAX movie theater and a shopping mall.
