Saturday 17.7.2010 day 276 Otavalo markets We got up early and got our 7:30 tour to Otavalo markets the largest markets in Sth America. There was lots of fantastic stuff to buy and I especially loved the food and flower sections. Ecuador is supposed to have the best roses as they grow straighter due to them being on the equator. I would love to have brought loads of stuff but I just cannot fit it in my pack especially when I have a few more weeks of carrying it around yet. I did see some new hiking boots that I would have liked to buy they were purple and very good quality and my old shoes are starting to fall apart. Asked how much holding one of them up and was told $24 witch was a ... read more

After leaving the jungle town Tena we hopped on a bus for an 8 hour trek to our next destination which happened to be a small mountain town north of Quito called Otavalo. Riding public buses in Latin America is a whole different kind of experience! We were never surprised by what came onto the bus... whether it be a puppy in a diaper, random unidentified animals in boxes with breathing holes in the top, or a salesman trying to sell a herbal powder to basically cure you from any ailment you could ever have. Beyond the random sales and passengers, the views swirling through the Andes were amazing! When we arrived in Otavalo our bodies once again had to adapt to the super high altitude and change of climate. From the low humid jungle in ... read more

So we finally made it out of Colombia after 3 weeks! On the bus we met these two awesome girls; Brigette from Las Vegas & Elisa from Italy and found we were pretty much traveling the same route so after easily crossing the border via bus and walking, we arrived in the cute town of Otavalo in the afternoon. We went to get some lunch at a restaurant called Otavalito and paid $5 for a 4 course meal of sopa de mote, crepe de atun, lomo asado con verduras y papas (grilled beef w veggies and potatoes), and helado de mango...mmm super rico! After filling our bellies with Ecuadorian deliciousess, made camp at a cheap hostel called Takia Makia. We ended up squeezing 4 of us in a 3 bed room, so it was a little ... read more

Estoy en Otavalo. ¿Dónde estas? Yes I'm in Otavalo. And it's high in the Andes in northern Ecuador, just north of the equator, not far from the border with Columbia in Latin America. Elevation is 2560m. Altitude sickness has kicked in; yet it is a new world for me and immensely exciting. Strangely, my Spanish has improved since I left Argentina last October, but it will need to get much better before I can understand anything much about the culture here. Except that the people are friendly and welcome strangers. It is a textile centre, with a very busy craft market that attracts tourists from all over the country. It's best for a newcomer to let the pictures speak for themselves. ¿Como viajé aquí? A twenty-two hour flight, Sydney - Auckland - Santiago - Quito delivered ... read more

Mitad del Mundo We decided after speaking to a scottish girl (Claire) the night before whilst playing shithead, that with us being so close to the equator we should visit. Even though it was only $10 in a taxi to get there from our hostel (about £3.50 each) we decided to brave the buses at 25c each you can't go wrong or can you? The first mistake we made was getting on the bus and saying Norte (which just means north) instead of saying the bus terminal we needed to get to. We were on the bus about an hour and a half until the collection guy (a little Ecuadorian guy that hung out of fhe bus shouting norte, norte) came up to us and in Spanish said something along the lines of where the hell ... read more

Hi All, After more than 8 months of travelling with hardly no shopping for souvenirs or just things we liked, we have decided that the Otavalo famous market and its surrounding villages will be the place were we would break the rule of ¨no shopping¨and we will shop and shop and shop...till we drop... Therefore, we have arrived to Otavalo on a Friday evening, just in time before the renowned Saturday indigenous market. And on Saturday morning we got up early to make sure we exploit the day to its fullest. We started the day with visiting the animal market - this was the cultural part of the day, as obviously we had no interest in buying any of the chickens, the guinea pigs or the cows that were on sale there. Yet, it was a ... read more

After all of the usual formalities at the border I was legally allowed into Ecuador and along with 4 others was on a bus heading for a smallish town 2 hours north of Ecuadorian capital. Otavalo is famed for its ever day market, but attracts the most tourists and is biggest on a Saturday, when residents from the surrounding areas come to trade their wares, ranging from kittens, guinea pigs and cows in the animal section, fresh fruit and vegetables in the food section, various Andean jumpers, gloves and socks, as well as the usual market tat that serve as rubbish present for friends and family back home. After 15 hours of travelling from Popayan in Colombia, we finally arrived in Otavalo and were dropped in what seemed to be the middle of nowhere. Luckily we ... read more

The problem with writing about events so long after they actually happened is that a lot of the detail is lost to me. Again I'm a week behind on the blog. But I've got an afternoon free so I'm determined to get totally up to date today...let's see how I get on! Saturday (10th April) morning, I'd already got my cab booked (Pedro, of course) to take me to one of the north terminals so that I could get a bus up to a small town called Otavalo. All I knew of Otavalo was that it was famous for its Saturday market of locally made handicrafts - alledgedly one of the biggest (if not the biggest) in South America. Although it looked like a sleepy little place from the guidebook, I figured the break from the ... read more

20/3/10 I told a massive lie in my last post. 20 hour bus journeys can be hell. From Mancora to Otavalo we had to get on 3 different buses. The first 3 hour bus to the border of Ecuador involved no leg room and no air conditioning in temperatures well over 30 degrees. Then we got off the bus, got on what looked like a dodgy taxi and headed to our next bus. At least this one was air conditioned, but you could measure out the leg room with a 30cm ruler. Did not get much sleep. Arrive in Quito early in the morning and get straight on another bus to Otavalo. Here is where we have most of our problems. Despite tying the straps of the bag to my feet, a pesky pickpocketer sitting behind ... read more
