This past week I taught science instead of just math and syllables! Maya and I did body parts together with the first and second graders on Wednesday. For one of the activities we had them color body parts on paper, cut them out, and then they had to tape them on the parts of their bodies that matched. So we had a bunch of kids running around with bits of paper taped all over them. It was really cute!!! Thursday I did the circle of life, which for second graders consists of birth, growing, reproduction, and death. Each kid made a Book of Life with one stage on each page. I brought up a stapler to put the books together. It was the first time any of them had seen a stapler so it was like ... read more

I'm working with the second graders now instead of first. A little more challenging, and I actually have to have more stuff planned because I can't just take them outside to play a game to fill up time. They actually have to study. I do try to include fun stuff too though. This week was my first week. Lucila only gave me reading (syllables) and math to teach. For the whole week. No science or social studies or anything. Maya (who's teaching the first graders) and I decided we would put our kids together and add in our own sciences: one morning of natural science and one of social science a week. Wednesday we talked about families and communities and made family flowers with the names of the kids' parents, grandparents, and siblings on the petals ... read more

So one day when we got to school the kids had a fire going in a cardboard box off to the side of the school. It was a cold cloudy drizzly day so it made sense to warm up but still, it's school so we weren't sure it was allowed. Only in Ecuador would we even consider that maybe it's allowed. We checked with Lucila and she said it was definitely not allowed. So we had to go break up the party. Nicole stomped on it to put it out but then the kids all ran away with it. It wasn't completely out and it quickly reignited. Of course after that they wouldn't let us get close enough to put it out so we ended up chasing them before cornering them and disposing of the box. ... read more

Friday (27) was Día de La Bandera all over Ecuador. Basically it is a celebration of the 7th graders, kind of like 6th grade graduation in the States. Except it's during the year. It is a recognition of the students' academic achievement. A couple schools get together at one of the campuses for the event. We (Susan, Nicole, and I) went to Tangaley, about 35 minutes away from Otavalo, with the 7th graders, Nancy, Lucila (teachers) and the moms of the kids. We weren't really sure what to expect, but it was actually pretty cool. Each school has an Ecuadorian flag that they march with. The top student is the Abandadera (flag carrier) and the next 2 students are Escoldas and walk behind the flag bearer holding ribbons attached to the top of the flag pole. ... read more

So it's Carnaval here (February 23-24), which in Ecuador basically means that it's a nation-wide massive water/foam/flour fight constantly. Seriously, before there was some danger of getting sprayed, but now if you leave your house you're going to get foamed or wet. Ecuador is supposedly the only country that celebrates in this way and I definitely think we need to come up with some holiday in the States that involves the same activities. Not even joking. It's so much fun! Monday (23) Nicole, Elysia, George, Kate, Avive, and I went to Peguche waterfall, the center of the fun in Otavalo. The walk there was half the excitement. Constant battles with other pedestrians and occasional truck-fulls of teenagers with buckets of water and water ballons. We went armed with foam so we were able to retaliate. By ... read more

The teachers had another training again on Friday, seems to happen every week. So we had all the kids. We had a carnival, but the type that we would ahve at home with different stations. First we made Pasaportes de Divertido (passports to fun). Then they split into groups and rotated to all the stations, and when they completed a station we gave them a sticker in their passports. There was a basketball shooting station, beanbag toss, musical chairs, relay race with lines on a spoon and hopscotch, and the equivalent of an egg toss except we used bean bags. It was really fun and they all enjoyed it! Then after lunch we attacked them with their own style of Carnaval: water ballons, water guns, anything else that would hold water, and foam spray. By the ... read more

If you read down my blog, you would have seen that I attended a Spanish language school in Cuenca Ecuador last year (2008). I continued my lessons this year at the Otavalo Spanish Institute (OSI) in, well, Otavalo. Choosing the school was not done with much investigation on my part, my goal was to find a school close to Ibarra where I wanted to fly gliders (see my “Gliding in Ecuador” blogs). My internet search did not find any schools in Ibarra, so I settled on Otavalo, which is about 15 kilometers down the road. I should add that there are schools in Ibarra, it is just that they don't have an internet presence (driving around Ibarra, I saw one with an interesting name “Center Canadiense de Idiomas”). My internet search for Otavalo came up with ... read more

So let's see... what's new? I'm officially allowed to be in Ecuador now! I had to register my visa because it's a 6-month one instead of the normal 3 month one but now everything's done! Woohoo! Friday once again the teachers weren't at school. I'm starting to see a pattern here... We made valentines day cards with the kids for them to give to their parents and then did a bunch of different types of relay races. In the evening we had another movie night at the GVI House after walking through the pouring rain. Saturday was more exploring of the market and Otavalo, sleeping in, and relaxing. In the evening we (Elysia, George, Kate and I) went to La Jampa again. We were going to go to Jalajala down the street to try something new ... read more

In February 2009, our family, two adults and two children, ages 12 and 9, headed to Ecuador for a week of hiking, biking, and riding in the Andes. We planned to spend six nights north of Quito near Ottavalo at Hacienda Cusin, a 500 year old estate, for six nights, and then spend one night south of Quito in Cotopaxi National Park at Hacienda Hato Verde, a family owned Inn. In Cotopaxi, our plan is to mountain bike down the tallest active volcano in the world. We plan to finish the trip with a day in the old city of Quito and a visit to the Mitad del Mundo ("Middle of the World") or Equatorial monument. We are writing this report as we go. We arrived in Quito early afternoon and were promptly picked up by ... read more

Saturday night (7) I went to mass with my family. My whole family: 2 brothers, mom, grandma, great-grandma, cousin/sister, my mom's sister's family, and my mom's brother's family who came up from Quito. So basically a lot of people! We took up a couple rows. The church was completely full, even people standing. They're starting the special masses leading up to Carnaval. After that I went over to the GVI House for a movie/icecream night. We watched Australia. It was pretty good. Sunday was all about relaxing! Sleeping in for once, reading, lesson planning, exploring other parts of Otavalo. The excitement for Carnaval has already started here. It started the beginning of February and is increasing every day. In Ecuador the big thing is getting people wet. Water ballons, water guns, and foam so far. On ... read more
