The rest of the week was good. Teaching teaching and more teaching. The kids alternate between listening really well and being ridiculously hyper and non-compliant. The good definitely outweighs the annoyances though and I love working with them! I think it's going to be hard to leave! Friday the teachers were gone again for another meeting so we had all the kids. More beading and then a bunch of PE: relay races, obstacle courses... one of the races they had to put on big clothes over their own as part of it. It was hilarious, especially for the really little ones because the clothes were massive! After the first couple people, everyone started helping their teammates get in and out of the clothes. It wasn't supposed to work that way, but it was actually a really ... read more

This blog is just a mix of thoughts that I have compiled while staying here. Just some small observations about life here and in Ecuador in general. Perhaps it is representative of life in general outside of Canada, I don't know, I really don't have a lot of world experience to draw upon. Dogs. My hat goes off to the dog food manufacturers in North America, they must be making billions. I see the advertisements on TV all the time. I don't know anyone at home who doesn't feed their pet dog some kind of special mix dog food based on some thoughtful, (but probably based on advice from the manufacturers) analysis of their dog's needs. Here in Otavalo, there are dogs everywhere. Running free in the streets, in people's yards, in packs out in the ... read more

I added 2 pictures to the Ecuador entry, and then obviously to the Mindo one and this one. Monday ( Feb. 2) was back to school! We're still doing the same things (shapes, sizes, colors, counting) and the kids are starting to get tired of it. Even though we're doing different activities, it's still the same topic. Monday they were especially energetic and didn't want to listen, I think partly because they didn't get their colada in the morning because there wasn't any gas for the stove. Luckily we got some gas by lunch time. The hardest part about teaching is seeing some of the kids come to school limping or with fresh bruises that may or may not have been from playing or falling down... Monday one of my girls came in with a black ... read more

Yesterday and today were teacher training days for the rural indigenous schools. So, we had the whole school (and the kids of course) to ourselves. 38 were there yesterday, 35 today. Because we had so many over such a large age range we did art projects. Yesterday we read ¨Where the Wild Things Are¨with the little ones and then made masks and the older ones made necklaces and bracelets with tiny beads. Today we switched. We also did some PE. We were going to do some other activities, math races, etc but they all seemed to be having a good time doing what they were doing so we just went with it. We finished after lunch (around 11:30) and then cleaned up and got home early. I was actually surprised by how well it went. I ... read more

3 days down! It's weird that it's already Wednesday! It's gone by pretty fast, surprisingly. Usually the first days are the slowest! So I started my teaching Monday. At Larcacunga. There are only 3 kids in my class, Aida, Natali, and Anderson. But they're all young so they are full of energy and don't like to sit still for long doing work. They're first graders, but the grades here are a lot different than at home. They haven't really done anything with writing numbers and letters (although they can write their names) and any sort of reading is unheard of. We're mostly doing preschool/kindergarten stuff: pencil control, drawing straight lines, shapes, sizes, counting... all that good stuff. Monday (26) was my first day so I was supposed to just be helping the director with teaching so ... read more

So let's see... where was I? I think Friday (23rd). In the evening we were all going to go out, but the people who had been teaching all week were tired so we postponed it until Saturday. Friday, Elysia, Kate, and I watched a movie on Kate's laptop and then slept. Saturday we explored the market. Plaza de Ponchos is the block where the market is ever day of the week. On Saturdays, the size multiplies! The block was full, as usual, and then it extended out into the streets on either side and continued up and down for about 6 blocks. And ever street perpendicular to those streets was also full. Needless to say, cars weren't allowed. Some of the stuff was similar, but there were also some things that were only available at one ... read more

Hello again... let's see... the past couple days I've had Spanish classes from 8:30-12:30 and 2-4. Then I either do stuff related to the volunteering, go to the internet, or go home and do spanish homework. I think it's going to be harder to get really good at spanish than I thought just because there aren't as many opportunities to practice as I was expecting. I figured I would be living with a family so I would be totally immersed and by the end of 4 months I would be relatively fluent. Well, that would be nice but there are some problems. Mainly that I'm not truly immersed. I will be teaching the kids in spanish, but there's kind of a set vocabulary that you use for teaching and you don't need much more. It's not ... read more

Hello to all! When I left off last it was Friday the 9th. What a fun and special day! Omid came to school in the morning, so after the first two classes and time that I spent talking to Jaime about his slaughtering and selling chickens project he has with 9th grade, we spent the day studying book 5 and in the breaks we played the guitar and sang, with all the kids and youth flocking around to join in, lots of laughing and "play this, or play that!" WE had a teacher's meeting after school, and since the teachers cook, we had a wonderful lunch of lentils, a big salad with lettuce, tomato and avocado, rice and fried meat and even some cake for dessert. Yummy yummy! the meeting itself was not very interesting, although ... read more

Yesterday I went up to my school! Larcacunga. Up in the mountains. Usually we take a public bus for half and hour and then hike up the mountain for 30 minutes but once a week we take food up for the school and on those days we ride in a pick-up truck. So I still haven't done the hike yet. There are 3 of us volunteers at this school. Lalita and I have the first and second graders and Matt has the 3rd graders. I officially have the first graders but there are only 3 so most of the time we'll have them together with the 8 second graders. There is another teacher for grades 4, 5, 6, 7 and then the director. The other teacher started on the same day as us, so before that ... read more
