Today was a holiday. I am told that Colombia is one of the countries with the most holidays in the world. It is weird for me that it is on a Thursday since normally holidays get moved to Fridays or Mondays in order to create a long weekend, but honestly, I'm not complaining. It was a welcome break. Living in another language is hard. I have a newfound respect for all of my international friends living in the US. At the end of the day, my brain is tired of trying to come up with the right words and my tongue is tired of trying to pronounce things without sounding like a gringa. Hopefully that feeling passes after a while though. Hopefully after this experience not only my clinical skills but my Spanish will be better ... read more

These past few days have been crazy and I have learned so many things! My first day in the clinic (although it's really more of a hospital) was mostly information. I had to explain to them what I was (they were taking bets about whether I was a fisio or a doctor). I learned about a lot of the differences in PT between the US and Colombia. Also, a lot of the syndromes, diseases and treatments that we identify with acronyms, they identify with different acronyms. For example - a common disease, COPD, is called EPOC (pronouced eh-pok), CVA is AVC or ECB or they pronounce it altogether. Every day I have figured out a new disease in Spanish. Luckily many of them share the same roots. In Colombia, the physical therapists do both the physical ... read more

Today I woke up to a beautiful day. It was hot and sweaty but it was still nice. On Sundays, in the morning, on many of the main streets no cars or motorcycles are allowed. It is so quiet (comparatively) and it doesn't smell as much like gasoline - which is nice. I'm told that right now we are in winter - which basically means it rains a lot. It does not mean that it gets cold. I think the "coldest" it has been since I've gotten here was 77 degrees Fahrenheit. That's cold to the locals. However, since it's so rainy it gets really humid, since it's really humid, the mosquitos come out in full force. Fortunately, they have invented a fun toy that kills small bugs, but is mainly aimed at killing mosquitoes. It ... read more

Day 2 So Brittany, what did you do during your second day in Colombia? I ate – a lot. Fresh fruit, delicious fish, yuca, empanadas… At every house you stop, they offer you a fresh fruit juice, coffee or tea. Every single one. And then of course comes food, which – how can you say no?! It’s delicious – always. I am almost 100% positive that I am going to return to the US at least 20 lbs heavier. My mission for this week – find a gym. Fun fact about the streets here, they are all numbers, there is a calle 40, Carrera 40, and avenida 40. They also have streets called Calle 26 B (I’m sure there is a 26 A too) and inexplicably, Carrera 38 runs right into Avenida 40 and they become ... read more

Welcome to Colombia Following in the footsteps of my good friend Nicole who also is doing an international internship as well as the sound advice of a good friend, here is my travel blog. Made it to Colombia today. What a beautiful country, full of adventures. Here are some key things I learned on my first day here 1. You CANNOT enter Colombia if you do not have an address to go to. - Literally, you can google a McDonalds and tell them you are going to stay there with some friends and that’s good enough. Just memorize it because you will have to tell three different people on your way out of the airport 2. Colombians have excellent depth perception – or their cars magically shrink to be able to fit three side by side ... read more

Hey, my friends, Hola, mis amigos, This entry would be about the Plains region of Colombia, an area where you can find such a diversity of landscapes and sceneries, but what I most miss from the region are the lovely sunsets: Beautiful tones depicting the colours of our Colombian flag quite willing to present themselves to you; as a matter of fact, this area in the north east of Colombia treats you to a delicious cocktail to your eyes, happily combining that very smell of the plains and the most green savanna. Imagine the Llaneros raising their cattle and hunting chiguiros (a rodent) while chewing chimó, a picture you can only have in your mind... as weird as these combinations might sound, the Llano caters to you that and much more, which ... read more

Heading on down to the docks in Belem, we spent an appreciable amount of time hanging around amidst the constant smell of bananas, (although not as long as the guys who had gone down in the morning to try, with no avail, to save us all hammock spaces) before eventually boarding the ship that would be our home for the next 5-6 days. Already bustling, the rush was to find good hammock locations as there is precious little available room. As things were, we managed to group all of ours together at the end of the area, although in a somewhat cosy manner. Staying up top on the ferry, we set into a few beers and I had my leftover Pizza Hut pizza (well we needed to bring food for the first night - what else ... read more
