When you think of South American food, unfortunately, many people think of tacos and enchiladas, which is entirely inaccurate for pretty much everywhere except Mexico. It's actually pretty difficult to generalize food in S America as each country and even each region within each country has such different customs when it comes to preparing food. In fact, even foods with the same name and same general idea behind them can be so different, they are unrecognizeable when you're used to seeing it a certain way. I can't speak for everywhere else, but in Colombia, the food is amazing - ajiaco, sancocho, mamona, tamales, picadas, cholaos, arepas, empanadas, I mean, there were very few things that I didn't love. But this entry is not about that. It's about bread. One thing that I will miss so much ... read more

For whatever reason, a lot of people have asked me if I miss my country. I've only got 2 weeks left here in this beautiful country, and I can honestly say, I really don't miss my country. If it wasn't for my husband being there, I wouldn't really want to go back at all. While it's not perfect, and if I ever got sick, I would definitely want to be in my country (because even though everyone complains about the health care and resources, it's pretty damned good), but to live, it's really not at great as everyone thinks. Here you have time to enjoy life, it's not nearly as stressful as life is in the US (in my experience). Things aren't as strict, people are friendlier, helpful, the food is delicious, and just the style ... read more

Here is a quick summary of the kinds of fruits I've been eating here (all day every day) besides the regulars like bananas, apples and pears. Guama - It looks like a really long skinny cucumber, but on the inside it looks like a banana sliced up with lucky beans inside of it. It tastes like marshmallows, it's really good Guanabana - it's green and spiky on the outside, but it tastes so freaking good, like candy. It's really sweet and it tastes delicious when you make juice out of it, but I don't really know how to describe the taste. It's kind of annoying to eat because you have to take out all the seeds and it can get messy, but it's definitely worth it. Mango Dulce - It's everything you love about mangoes only ... read more

After a 12 day hiatus, I am back, by "popular" demand! A lot has happened in the past 12 days, some good things, some awful things and some downright strange things... It was a very stressful week 2 weeks ago... I had to give a presentation last Friday on physical therapy in the US and what we do. The stressful part was that it had to be in Spanish...I've given speeches and presentations before in front of my classes, but in my classes, I know most of the people. IN this instance, I only knew the people in the front row...everyone else was a complete stranger. Luckily, I wrote down my speech, otherwise, it might have been a disaster. However, I kind of felt like a rockstar because while I was giving the speech, there were ... read more

Living in Colombia has been a pretty cool experience. If I didn't miss my husband, I wouldn't mind staying here. Even though they don't have air conditioning, clean water, clean public restrooms stocked with toilet paper and soap, and the traffic is awful, I really don't miss that much from the US (except my husband). Maybe it's because I'm a foreigner, because I talk funny, or just because I've gotten really lucky, but people are very friendly, caring, concerned and helpful. It's a very polite society. They advised me when I got here, "people here invade your personal space and it might look like they are going to rob you, but if they are saying good morning, they aren't thieves" Good advice. Favorite things about living here (in no particular order): 1. The mountains in the ... read more

I've been here a little over two weeks now and I've made a few observations that I'd like to share... 1. When I left the US, my watch was 3 minutes behind. Here, however, according to some sources, it's right on time, others it's a few minutes behind, and others it's actually ahead. This adds to my suspicion that time as a concept is just not as important here, which is why my husband, and many of his latino friends and compatriots are chronically late. When they say to meet at 8, really they mean somewhere between 8:45 and 9:15. Needless to say, I don't worry about being late here 2. Netflix here is freaking awesome. They have so many more movies and TV shows available here, it's actually really frustrating. I mean, they even have ... read more

Friday night was "la noche de los mejores!" for our clinic. Basically it was an awards ceremony/gigantic party with all the "veteran" workers. I was invited because I'm American, sometimes, being from the US has it's perks! Anyway, one thing I really love about this country is how good they are at celebrating things. I think this country has more holidays than any other - At least one paid holiday every month, and sometimes more than 3 in a month! I've been to some work parties, and this one takes the cake. It was in a hotel ballroom, it had live dancers, a live band, a huge dance floor, a buffet with real food (not fried food), two desserts, raffles and free drinks. Everyone dressed up fancy, but danced salsa and reggaeton like they were in ... read more

One of my favorite authors, Gabriel Garcia Marquez won a nobel prize for his amazing novel, 100 years of solitude in which he perfected the magical realism style of writing. However, living here, it is clear that he didn't invent it. So many of the stories I hear living here seem like they could have come straight from Macondo and even some of my own experiences so far seem like they could have come straight out of the book. First of all, if you haven't read the book, do yourself a favor and read it. It's fantastic. I'll paraphrase just a few so you can get the jist... "She grew up by a river. They had no electricity or running water so they had to come out the river to bathe and wash things. She grew ... read more

Today we went to the Rio Borrachero. I'm not sure if that's the real name of the river or if that's just what it's called where we were. It was about a 45 min drive from our small city and man was it beautiful - the drive and the river. It is located in a somewhat isolated community where you get off the main road (and there aren't many main roads in these parts), and you have to drive about 2 miles on an unpaved, rocky dirt road. Then, which is somewhat different from what I was used to, you turn into a driveway - a private driveway, pay 2000 pesos per person (basically $1/person) and you drive to the backyard where it leads straight to the river. Blue water, beautiful trees, with a view of ... read more

Completed week one of my clinicals - wow time flies! I am really fortunate to have had this opportunity and I am learning so much, more than I could have possible imagined. As much as we complain about our healthcare system in the US, we have it pretty good, as do our health care workers... In general, a lot of the things we have are luxuries (even if we don't consider them so). For example, in Villavicencio, the temperature hangs out around 80-90 degrees on a regular basis, maybe dropping down into the mid 70s when it's "cold" That being said, most houses, apartments, grocery stores, shops don't have air conditioning. Yes, you sweat a lot and it's hot and you basically exist with a layer of sweat no matter how many cold showers you take ... read more
