Oooh - I'm back home and though this part of the trip was around June or July - it seems like ages ago. Agostin and I exited the jungle by boat but through some cock up or other not for once on our part we got dropped off early along the river and had to walk a fair distance through a different type of forest to a road where we were to be picked up by taxi. There was a bundle of wild life a long the dirt road, mostly different types of monkeys- One of our guides caught up to us after a while, on a motorbike that he had to find fuel for and the idea was that he would ferry us to the end of the road individually - the track was hilly ... read more

With our return date looming and our point of departure being half a continent away we decided that a couple of flights and a boat ride were necessary to ensure another call to Oneworld partner airlines wasn´t required in order to chane the date again......to be fair changing the date was out of the question given we had 2 tickets for U2 at Wembley on the 15th of August. We flew from Bogota to Leticia. Leticia is the Colombian town at the three frontiers, which is he point in the Amazon where Colombia meets Brasil and Peru. We had arranged to stay at a lodge, Tacana Lodge about 40 mins out of town, run by an Ex-pat Brit called Steve McLear and his Colombian partner, Elena. Steve's a top bloke who has been in South America ... read more

Although there was a sad farewell to Colombia, there was still one more place left to see before we said our final goodbyes. We had decided early on in our Colombian trip that we would love to see Leticia, a town in the far south of the country and interestingly a town that straddled two countries. It is from Leticia where the Amazon river is used to move produce and indeed people between the countries of Colombia, Brasil and Peru. Known as the 3 frontiers it is a weird and wonderful jungle town with intense heat and humidity and the potential for tropical thunderstorms at a moments notice. Unfortunately the only real way of getting there from Colombia is to fly, so we boarded a local flight down there with the intention of making our way ... read more

I’m about 9 weeks into my world travels 18 flights completed so far & find myself travelling around Iquitos in the Peruvian Amazon checking out the zoo which was a wee bit sad but had some cool animals that we hadn't seen on our amazing Amazon tour. The highlight was the pink fresh water dolphins that they hand-feed fish to so that you get a look at them out of the solid brown water...typical of most skanky wet places around the Amazon! Alas it's time to leave Peru & my traves with Julz behind & head out on my ownsome to Colombia: The boat trip down the Amazon took 11 hours in what looked like the inside of an aircraft cabin, had waiter service & two toilets, but wasn't too bad...considering I was out until 2 ... read more

You squash another mosquito against your skin while admiring the dense jungle scenery. Colourful birds fly past while you are distracted by pink dolphins jumping from the river. Indigenous children stop and stare while you float past remote jungle villages. Suddenly the boat speeds up and you hold on tight as it crashes through giant lilies and drift wood. You sit back and struggle to take in the size of the Amazon while looking at a million prehistoric trees. Suddenly it all sinks in, you are in one of the most remote and beautiful places on earth - The Colombian Amazon. Leticia & The Trans Frontier -------------------------- Where else in the world can you cross illegally between 3 countries several times in one day? On a Colombian visa I travelled back and forth between Colombia, Brazil ... read more

After the first boat trip we were both perhaps a little apprehensive about another week on a boat with nothing to eat but rice, spaghetti, beans and a dubious meat for every meal and the continual onslaught of mosquitos and other more horrible and large unkown insects that appeared as soon as the sun dissapeared over the forest. Then again we had had a great week on the previous boat, infact one of the best, and as usual it was nowhere near as bad as fellow gringos had made out. The man who sold our ticket to us told us that there was no need to put our hammock up early on this boat as there would only be a small amount of people getting on in Manaus and the boat was much bigger than the ... read more

Hey everyone!! Sorry i havent done an update for ages but things have been quite crazy the last few weeks!! Finally arrived in Tabachinga after 6 days on the Amazon boat and got a taxi over the border to Leticia (Colombia) after stamping out of Brazil, - the change between countries was sooo obvious, once in Colombia the streets were lined with police and military men, armed with massive maschine guns... was quite scary but reassuring at the same time! After learning a bit of Spanish on the boat, I even managed to have a tiny political conversation with the taxi driver about how Colombia is now much safter because of Uribe, the Colombian president! :o) Got stamped into Colombia at the Leticia airport and then asked to be dropped of at an internet cafe in ... read more

At the end of our little cruise we touched down in Santa Rosa, which is the Peruvian side of the river. From where we stood, we could see Leticia (the Colombian border town) and Tabatinga (the Brazilian town) on this three-way border. After a few emigration formalities, mainly involving me paying a small fine for overstaying my Peruvian visa, we hopped from dirty nappy to dirty nappy to get into a boat for five minutes to take us to Colombia. Expecting full body cavity searches and hectic immigration, we were surprised to find absolutely nothing in the way of immigration - no desk, no guard, no closed office, no queue. In fact, not even the army guys, with their reassuring sub-machine guns, knew where we could do things correctly and legally. So we didn´t. We just ... read more
