The next day we moved to a more centrally located hotel built in the 16th century, for the simple reason that Quito is a difficult place to arrange trips and our original hotel was useless. Early the next morning we headed north crossing the equator and traversing a forest area rich with the endangered Spectacled bears. Mindo apparently has grown hugely in recent years but is still a reasonably small village with some great natural attractions including a couple of butterfly houses and wonderful birding, I was particularly excited about the hummingbirds which were incredinle. I had never seen one before and it was a real challenge to photograph them, one location we visited was crawling with birds but they told me that in May the area is truly spectacular for Toucans and many other species. ... read more

Yes, I even listened to Guns 'N Roses as my flight prepared to land at the Leticia, Colombia airport smack in the middle of the Amazon jungle. I'm kind of a nerd like that. Someone once told me that the Amazon River basin and the rainforest that surrounds it are the lungs of the Earth. Flying over the jungle it was easy to see why. Endless stretches of jungle canopy as far as I could see from my airplane window performing the crucial task of providing oxygen for the planet. I was exhilarated to be here and I could not wait for the adventure to commence. So leaving Villa de Leyva my aim was to not stay a night in Bogota as I had already toured this massive city and after where I had been the ... read more

The sensation of entering in a world which don't belong to you anymore, that's what we passed through in this first experience in the Amazonian forest. Welcomed in the house of Herman for a week, we had to cumulate the experiences in the "Selva", walk into it, sleep into it, get lost into it and get feeded by it. We could spend the ... read more

New personal record for fastest international border crossing (from Colombia to Brazil): 10 sec Boat passengers that almost drowned in front of our eyes: 10 Stay at Amazon rainforest lodge in the middle of the Amazon River: awesome experience Getting lost at Brazilian indigenous village looking for an artisan mask to buy: yes While we are waiting for the container ship from Panama to arrive in Colombia and get our bike through customs, Zoe and I decided to spend a few days in the Amazon rain forest. We traveled to Leticia, which is one of the main ports in the inner Amazon River upstream towards the Andes. Leticia is located at the point where Colombia, Brazil and Peru come together in an area which is called Tres Fronteras in Spanish, i.e. three borders. Leticia is now ... read more

I was lucky enough to spend 2 days living with the indigenous community of San Pedro de Tipisca, 3 hours boat ride from Puerto Narino. The community of San Pedro de Tipisca has about 30 houses, 1 school, 3 teachers for 90 students of all ages, 1 church, and zero clinic. The native language is Ticuna and is the last Colombian community before reaching the neighboring Peru along the Amazon River. I stayed with the family of Nixon Macedo (Nixon, his wife, and 3 daughters ages 2, 6, and 12). They asked why did I choose to come to their small village. I told them I wanted to observe and learn about their culture and ways of livings. In the morning, I went to bathe by the river bank with the kids. While the kids are ... read more

We arrived to the place of 3 frontiers before lunch time and were dropped at the bank of the Amazon on the Peruvian side, we think. It was hard to tell because there was a lot going on around us and to get anywhere we had to take a water taxi anyway. We negotiated a price with a boatmen and he took us first to the immigration office so that we could be stamped out of Peru. As it happens water is too low for the barca to go there so you have to really deal with the extra cost. It was not much anyway and the guy waited for us to take us to Leticia, port of entry to Colombia…ah, finally. People say it is not pretty but we found it rather nice. The streets ... read more

I have just recently celebrated a year here in the Colombian Amazon, and what a year it has been. There have been a lot of great moments and a lot of absolutely terrible ones. But if you asked me would I do it all again I would say yes in a heart beat. I came to the Amazon with the hope of starting an ecotoursim business. The year prior I had scouted out possible locations and came across the native community of San Martin. Here I met a couple that were looking to transform their camping ground into more of a lodge, however they didn't have the funds nor the know how to go about doing it. I immediately realized that this could work out perfectly for me so I proposed we work together and that ... read more
