My dearest friends, It seems that time does not stop for us and that we should carry on travelling to continue our learning quest for more culture. Indeed, time flies: We´re already reaching the end of January 2014, and the little traveller inside me felt like embarking on a new trip intended to look into ancient civilisations that care about spirituality; thinking that way, I decided to leave home again to visit San Agustin´s archeological park, a UNESCO site full of amazing pre-columbian finds. I had overlooked this Colombian area for a long time, an area full of stone statues representing different ancient indigenous rituals-, it dawned on me that I was about to head to the southern Colombian department of Huila, there I went. But was I worried about safety? oh yes...

Parece que el tiempo no se detiene para nosotros y que debemos continuar viajando para saciar nuestra búsqueda de aprendizaje cultural. De hecho, el tiempo vuela: Ya estamos a finales de enero de 2014, el primer mes de un nuevo año casi se ha ido ya, entonces, manos a la obra:
vamos a hacer que este año sea sinónimo de un nuevo viaje en el que espero saber más sobre las costumbres de antiguas civilizaciones que le daban más importancia que nosotros a la espiritualidad; pensando de esa manera, me decidí a salir de casa de nuevo por una semana a visitar un sitio lleno de sorprendentes hallazgos precolombinos; es cierto, aunque, desde hace mucho tiempo, había pasado por alto esta zona colombiana llena de estatuas de piedra que representan diferentes rituales indígenas antiguos, me di cuenta que ya era hora de visitarla y me dirigí al departamento colombiano del sur del Huila. Pero estaba yo preocupado por la seguridad? Oh si...
I must own up that... Well, not that I had overlooked it, to be honest, this area used to be quite dangerous and I didn´t want to be in a spot of bother with any danger; to worsen things out, the day before I visited, there was this huge article on El Tiempo, one of our Colombian newspapers, stating that there would be meetings aiming to tackle the security issue as the area was riddled with too many kidnappings, murders and the like. Well, after the reading, I hesitated a lot but decided to go to Popayan´s bus station and interview passersby from the region.
Bueno, no es que yo lo hubiera pasado por alto, para ser honesto, esta zona solía ser muy peligrosa y yo no quería crearme líos; para empeorar las cosas, el día antes de mi visita, había aparecido este gran artículo en el Tiempo, uno de los periódicos más leídos de Colombia, declarando que se estaban organizando reuniones entre altos mandatarios para tratar el problema de la zona: según el artículo, el área estaba siendo acosada por demasiados secuestros, asesinatos y problemas similares. Bueno, luego de la lectura, dudé mucho para atreverme, pero decidí ir a la estación de autobuses de Popayán y empecé a entrevistar a la gente de la región.
The people´s answers would vary: There were those who would tell me there was a 50 %!c(MISSING)hance that my trip would be trouble free, others would tell me that the road was full of the Colombian army or that these issues belong only to the past. After being more or less reassured, I decided to be brave enough to visit, lucky me I did. Once there, the sight of foreigners strolling the site in a very uncomplicated way or eating tacos in a Mexican restaurant located in the main park of the village reassured me even more. I couldn´t help eavesdropping on a conversation between a couple of Americans who were there after doing some volunteering in Ecuador. The girl said it was her second day in Colombia and she already loved it, I am crossing my fingers so that she enjoys her visit a great deal. And I must say I didn´t see a single policeman or soldier on the road, oops!
Había de todo en las respuestas de la gente, algunos me decían que podría tener un 50%!d(MISSING)e probabilidad de que me pasara algo, otros decían que la carretera estaba militarizada o que los problemas solo eran cosa del pasado. Después de estar más o menos seguro de no arriesgarme tanto, decidí ser valiente y visitar, por suerte lo hice. Ver a varios turistas extranjeros que paseaban en el sitio como Pedro por su casa o comiendo tacos en un restaurante mexicano del parque me tranquilizó aún más. de una pareja de Americanos, la chica acababa de terminar un año de voluntariado en Ecuador y era su segundo día en Colombia, decía que ya le gustaba mucho mi país. Espero que le siga yendo bien y disfrutando de Colombia. Y miren que no vi ni un policía ni un soldado en la carretera

I had thought of visiting San Agustin for a long time but I never had that opportunity until I saw myself having a big lunch in Popayan and that's when I thought... well...I am almost there, and it would be such a shame not to go right now. and to tell you the truth, I was lucky I went!
Once there, the sight of foreigners strolling the site in a very uncomplicated way or eating tacos in a Mexican restaurant located in the main park of the village reassured me even more. Buying tickets
The ticket from Popayán was 30,000 pesos, like USD15, which is understandable as it takes like 5 hours on a bumpy road. After reaching the destination, well, or almost, we were picked up by Anibal Anacona, the runner of the Anacaona agency (guess who the owner is), who was quite helpful and very good promoter of his travel agency. He offers hotels for staying overnight in San Agustin, different horse, jeep and cascade tours, etc. Before I forget, I must say that the taxi ride to the village is included in the Popayan´s ticket. What you have to pay extra is the ride from the village to the archaeological park, which amounts to $5,000 (USD2) in taxi and $2,000 (USD1) on a bus.
El tickete desde Popayán me costó 30.000 pesos, como 15 dólares, lo cual es comprensible, ya que dura como 5 horas el trayecto sobre una carretera que te hace saltar, antecitos del pueblo nos recogió Aníbal Anacona, el encargado de la agencia que lleva su apellido, quien fue bastante servicial y buen
promotor de su agencia de viajes. Él ofrece un hotel para alojarse en San Agustín, al igual que toures del sitio a caballo, en jeep, excursiones a las cascadas, etc. Ah, y antes que se me olvide, el viaje en taxi hasta el pueblo está incluido en el boleto de Popayán. Lo que si hay que pagar aparte es del pueblo al parque arqueológico que son como 5000 pesos en taxi y 2000 en bus.
San Agustin, the village The pretty simple San Agustin village is not very far from its capital Neiva, the 30,000-inhabitant village happened to repeat the same history of my hometown as it was destroyed after being first founded in 1752. Not until 1790 did Lucas de Herazo found it again. Apart from the fact that San Agustin is a coffee producer area, there is not much to see or visit but hey…do not overlook it or else, you would miss one of the best Southamerican archaeological sites.

Tombs that were plundered by robbers
Not only were they buried with their family but the most precious objects where hidden in these tombspasó a repetir la misma historia de mi ciudad natal, ya que fué destruido después de haber sido fundado por primera vez en 1752. Fué entonces hasta 1790, cuando Lucas de Herazo decidió construirlo nuevamente. Aparte del hecho de que San Agustín es una zona productora de café, no hay mucho que ver o visitar ahí, pero hey ... no pasemos por alto el sitio o de lo contrario, se perdería uno de los mejores sitios arqueológicos sudamericanos.
Anyway, the village is quite favoured by the huge amount of tourists you find there. Good for us and for them that there is more than just the unremarkable village, at only 7 minutes outside town, there is the archaeological park where dead San Agustin´s inhabitants were buried and their tombs were watched over by these stone statues with human and animalistic features. Some of them hold babies, amulets or even those that are accompanied by protective spirits, which I found quite impressive as never before had I seen such statues.
De todos modos, al pueblo le da vida la gran cantidad de turistas que se encuentran
allí. Es bueno tanto para ellos como para nosotros que no sea solamente una localidad que podría pasar desapercibida, pues a sólo 7 minutos a las afueras de la ciudad, allí queda el parque arqueológico donde los muertos se enterraban en tumbas que eran vigiladas por unas estatuas colosales de piedra con rasgos humanos y de bestias. Algunas de ellas cargan en sus brazos bebés, amuletos o están acompañadas de espíritus protectores, lo que es bastante impresionante pues, al menos yo, no había visto nunca semejantes estatuas.

The site depicting prehispanic cultures To get in, it is only 20,000 pesos ((USD10) or half of it if you are a student. It can be more if you want a tour guide which I think it is quite worth it. If you do, you will have to pay 50,000 pesos (USD25) for the tour, lucky me that when I just entered the site, a guy from a Neiva´s group that were about to start their tour, approached me so that I could chip in for the visit. I was very happy as otherwise, I would
be strolling around the statues on my own, taking pictures without knowing much about their features and reasons for the burials.
Patrimonio de la Humanidad El Sitio que muestra culturas prehispánicas Para entrar, sólo hay que pagar 20 mil pesos o la mitad, si se presenta carnet de estudiante. Tendrás que pagar más si quieres un guía turístico, que creo que vale la pena. El servicio de guía cuesta 50 mil pesos (USD25) para el acompañamiento; estuve de buenas ya que, cuando acababa de entrar en el sitio, un tipo de un grupo de Neiva que estaba a punto de comenzar su recorrido, se me acercó y me propuso si quería hacer parte del grupo. Y yo, pues encantado porque me salía el acompañamiento de guía más barato o de lo contrario, me esperaría un recorrido solo, tomando fotos y apenas enterándome de lo que estaba escrito en los avisos de cada estatua, lo cual es muy poca información.
The tour guide´s insights were quite helpful for the enjoyment of the visit, specially regarding the differences between men, women and some of the creatures. I also enjoyed his talk on how they used to paint their faces, he even showed us, out of some of the trees, he extracted what looked like bark from one of the trees and there he produced the yellow colour on one of us. Later, he did the same with blue and red. That was amazing! I believe women at that time didn´t have to go to big chain stores like Falabella or get their makeup on the net, nice.
Los comentarios del guía turístico durante la visita fueron muy útiles para poder disfrutar del recorrido, especialmente con respecto a las diferencias entre las estatuas de hombres, mujeres y algunas criaturas. También me gustó mucho su charla sobre cómo solían pintarse la cara, incluso nos mostró como lo hacían: sacaban los colores de la corteza de unos árboles, y El, llevándonos a tres árboles diferentes, produjo los colores de la bandera de Colombia: amarillo, azul y rojo. Eso fue increíble! Creo que las mujeres en ese tiempo no tenían que utilizar ni el mercado libre ni ir a Falabella para adquirir su maquillaje, súper.
San Agustin, an enigmatic civilisation Definitely an advanced civilisation that disappeared mystically about 1,500 years ago, just some twenty years before the Spaniards arrived to conquer us. The civilisation was so enigmatic that archaeologists are not even sure about its name. Neither they understand the reason why some of the statues found resemble African and Asian animals; in their quest for an answer, they put it to the fact that the shamans -when having those long hallucinations that put them in trance- would travel as far as Asia and Africa and other places. And not only travelled to other geographical places, it seems that some of the statues have also characteristics of aliens. interesting, ain´t it? How could they do it without the

De verdad, una civilización con muchos enigmas Definitivamente San Agustin fue una civilización avanzada que desapareció misteriosamente hace unos 1.500 años, a sólo unos veinte años antes de que los españoles llegaran a conquistarnos. Esta civilización era tan enigmática que los mismos arqueólogos ni siquiera están seguros acerca de su nombre. Tampoco entienden la razón por la cual algunas de las estatuas encontradas se asemejan a animales de África y Asia, y en su búsqueda de una respuesta, se
lo atribuyen al hecho de que los chamanes, en sus largos trances alucinógenos, podrían haber viajado a esos continentes y a otros lugares. Y no sólo viajaron geográficamente, parece que algunas de las estatuas tienen también las características de seres extraterrestres; lo pone a uno a pensar, o no? sin iphone cómo harían?
Well, lucky us that in spite of those unanswered questions, they left behind trace evidence of their adorations as around 500 rock statues, depicting features that encompass their after-life beliefs, lie on this area so peaceful and sacred for them. Their dead people were buried with their family members whom they would dope so that they could stay put and sleep for as much as the dead would; their forever companions they were. In that way, they made sure that nothing would be missing: They´d also bury gold and pottery objects that would be needed to continue, their after-life experience without worries.
Bueno, por suerte que a pesar de esas preguntas sin respuestas, esta cultura nos dejó huellas imborrables que nos hablan de sus creencias en el más allá, alrededor de 500 estatuas de
piedra están allí para probarlo. Este lugar tan adorado para ellos también expande y conserva ese misticismo que ellos quisieron darle. Sus muertos eran enterrados con sus familiares vivos, a los que se les drogaba para que pudieran quedarse y dormir tanto tiempo como los difuntos; ellos serían sus compañeros para siempre. De esta manera, se asegurarían de que nada les faltaría: También enterraban oro y objetos de cerámica que serían necesarios para continuar sin necesidades en su siguiente vida.
Unfortunately, due to the lack of an organised heritage protecting institution, the tombs were plundered by robbers and many of these objects were stolen; not much has been found, just like what happened with the German explorer who found some of the statues and took a lot of their contents back to his country. San Agustin hoped to take their dead creatures beyond life
, as did other civilisations like the Egyptians, Aztecs Chinese, and many others. They buried their dead -I guess those who they considered the most important- and glorified their lives by building tombs protected by these colossal statues. Sometimes, you can even find shamans or spirits protecting the tombs which is quite thoughtful given their powers. Qué brillante manera de honrar a los muertos! Al igual que muchas civilizaciones como los Egipcios, Aztecas y Chinos que esperaban preparar el paso de sus difuntos al más allá, la cultura de San Agustin enterraba a sus muertos -supongo que a los que consideraban más importantes- y glorificaba su vida mediante la construcción de tumbas protegidas por estas estatuas colosales. Algunas veces, puedes incluso encontrar chamanes o aún espíritus protegiendo las tumbas, lo que es bastante ingenioso dados sus poderes.
The statues
The site is divided up into mesitas that differ from each other according to the purpose of the statues. Here, the outdoors display portrays an amount of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic statues dating from as long as 33 B.C to the 14th century that were found in different funeral sites. There stood the statues, sort of looking into you, with their big eyes and distinctive facial features. Apparently, they were found in different households and carefully transferred to the park. Some of them depict bodies of men and women or animals and there are also some tombs of different sizes, which let you guess whether they were dug for adults and children. El sitio está dividido en mesitas que se diferencian entre ellas de acuerdo al propósito de las estatuas. Aquí, en pleno aire libre, encontramos una cantidad de estatuas antropomorfas y zoomorfas que datan del año 33 AC hasta el siglo 14, éstas fueron encontradas en diferentes sitios funerarios. Las estatuas parecen como que te estuvieran mirando muy profundamente, con sus ojos grandes y rasgos distintivos. Al parecer, fueron encontradas en diferentes hogares y cuidadosamente trasladadas al parque. Algunas de ellas representan cuerpos
de hombres y mujeres, animales y también hay algunas tumbas de diferentes tamaños, que permiten adivinar cuales fueron construidas para los adultos y los niños.
The statues you see with a stonehenge style roof at the top belong to the wealthiest families. This civilisation used to bury their dead people twice just as we, catholics, do now. The only difference is the roof, catholics will use mausoleums. Anyway, first when people die and then when the bodies are decomposed, they are put into some urns.

Esta cultura solía enterrar a sus muertos dos veces, así como nosotros los católicos lo hacemos ahora. En primer lugar cuando la gente muere y luego, cuando los cuerpos se descomponen, se pone el contenido en algunas urnas.
One of the sites that impressed me the most was the Fuente del Lavapatas as it combines puddles and pictures of snakes, lizards, young people and some other animals, which let you wonder about the artistic level of its engravers. A shame that there is no information about the ways how they conducted their rituals and offerings.
Uno de los sitios que más me impresionó fue la Fuente del Lavapatas ya que combina charcos y figuras de culebras, lagartos, iguanas, jóvenes y otros animales, lo que nos lleva a preguntarnos por el nivel artístico de sus escultores. Es una lástima que no se tenga información sobre la forma como conducían los rituales y ofrendas.
They didn´t leave us scripts on rocks but statues No nos dejaron inscripciones en las piedras, pero si estátuas That´s right, nothing written was found as it didn´t exist, apparently. But what´s true is that this group was clever enough to portray their spiritual burial resemblance of their dead into these impressive carved stone statues: Anthropomorphic beings that sometimes look quite vivid and represent the feminine and masculine essence. They also depict animals that they considered sacred or emblematic such as the frogs (symbolising fertility), the eagle and the jaguar. Así es, no se encontró nada escrito, ya que no existía, al parecer nada escrito. Lo que si es verdad es que esta civilización fue lo suficientemente inteligente
para plasmar lo que se asemejaba al aspecto funeral de sus muertos en estas estatuas impresionantes talladas en piedra: Figuras antropomorfas que a veces parecen bastante vivientes representando la esencia femenina y masculina. También se representan los animales a los que ellos consideraban sagrados o símbolos de algunos valores; las ranas (que simbolizan la fertilidad), el águila y el jaguar.
As in China at the Emperor´s terracotta army site, it seems that there is still a lot to be found, let´s hope that this time, the findings will be made by Colombians as it will be a shame that they are taken abroad as the German explorer did. Well, on a hindsight, and wanting to be global, maybe it was not that bad that he had taken some statues back to Germany, according to our guide, it is people from Germany who are counted as the largest amount of foreign tourists the site counts. You see, had he not taken them with him, German tourists wouldn´t have come to find the follow-up to the puzzle.

no han explorado todo el sitio, esperemos que esta vez, lo que haya que buscar en San Agustin sea hecho por Colombianos o al menos que sea controlado, ya que sería una pena que se llevaran algunos de estos tesoros al extranjero como lo hizo el explorador Alemán. Pero bien, reflexionando y mirándolo por el lado amable, tal vez no fué tan malo que se hubiera llevado algunas estatuas a Alemania, ya que de acuerdo con nuestro guía, son turistas Alemanes los que vienen más a visitar el sitio. Si no se las hubiera llevado, no hubiéramos tenido turistas Alemanas tratando de completar el rompecabezas.
You need to plan at least two days to admire the statues At the end of the visit, I rushed to the souvenir shop to get some replicas for my family and I must say that they are dirt cheap, not what you expect in a tourist site. Well, according to a sign I saw there, more statues will be soon exposed at El Bosque de las Estatuas as they are being returned from the Bogota National Museum exhibition. There are also horse tours (around 40,000 pesos) in which you can actually enjoy the rides while admiring the statues, nice landscapes and the stunning waterfalls.
Necesitan dedicarle al menos dos días para admirar las estatuas Al final de la visita, me apresuré a la venta de los recuerditos para mi familia y tengo que decirlos que estaban demasiado baratos, no lo que se espera en un sitio turístico. Bueno, de acuerdo a un afiche que vi allí, cuando ustedes vayan verán más esculturas ya que las del Bosque de las Estatuas que se habían prestado al Museo Nacional de Bogotá, ya estarán de vuelta pronto. También hay excursiones a caballo (unos 40.000 pesos) en la que se puede disfrutar de una buena montada mientras se admiran las estatuas, el paisaje y las hermosas cascadas.

I was actually in Colombia several times on my travels and loved the country in fact it is still my favorite country of all the 17 I've been to so far. I never had the privilege of getting to this national park, but it looks amazing! Great blog and pictures Frank! Happy travels! -Greg
