Dear folks, at first sight, it looks as if I had been to Cartagena due to so many colonial buildings but I was not. The small city located two hours from Cali is full of museums, churches and colonial styles rich in art and history that offer the visitor a great deal of parks, gastronomic venues and peaceful strolls; all combined within this elegant framework of beautiful landscapes and a lovely architectural adventure; therefore here is your chance to peacefully stroll the Spanish streets with their omnipresent colonial touch. To tell you the truth, when you go there, you might have the impression of living in the past as the houses look like relics that brilliantly survived the earthquake. They were beautifully restored, of course..
Mis queridos amigos, a primera vista, podrán pensar que estuve nuevamente en Cartagena gracias a tantos edificios coloniales pero la verdad, no. Esta pequeña ciudad, que se encuentra a sólo dos horas de Cali, está llena de museos, iglesias y estilos coloniales ricos en arte e historia, ofreciendo al visitante igual cantidad de parques, sitios gastronómicos y caminatas placenteras. Todo combinado agradablemente en un esquema de paisajes hermosos y una arquitectura genial. Es por eso
que les llegó su oportunidad de pasearse recordando calles españolas con su inconfundible toque colonial. Para decir verdad, cuando vengan, podrán sentir que están de vuelta al pasado ya que muchas de esas casas parecen reliquias que sobrevivieron al terremoto.
A bit of history The white City, as it is popularly called, was founded in 1537 by Sebastian de Belarcazar, another hunter of El Dorado treasures, who also founded Cali and Quito in Ecuador. Having resisted windfall damages, the city is also a history book as some national presidents were born there.
La Ciudad Blanca, como se le conoce popularmente, fue fundada en 1537 por Sebastián de Belarcázar, otro buscador de los tesoros del Dorado, quien también fundó a Cali y a Quito. Habiendo resistido tantos daños vendavales, en especial dos horrorosos terremotos, la ciudad también es importante por los presidentes colombianos que nacieron allí.
An important port Climate Lovely, mild as it is located at an altitude of 1,737 meters above sea level, with an average temperature of 19 degrees. That was enough reason to buy the ticket from Cali to Popayán ($32,000: around 10 bucks) to be taken in
a big van. I left very early that morning (6:45 am) and by nearly 9 am, the ubiquitous white houses in the historical centre was just what I needed to feel I was on holiday.
El clima es genial, templado ya que Popayán está localizada a una altitud de 1737 metros sobre el nivel del mar y su temperatura promedio es de 19 grados, nada mal. Esto fue razón suficiente para animarme a comprar el tiquete de Cali a Popayán (32.000 pesos Col) y me fui en una furgoneta. Salimos a las 6.45 am, total que cerca a las 9 de la mañana, estando rodeado de tantas casas blancas en el centro histórico era lo que necesitaba para sentir que ya estaba en vacaciones.
Its People Houses look quite luxurious and it is a fact that many are owned by rich families of the Valle del Cauca region, who seemed to have sat down all together to imagine the city right as it is now, with lots of similar mansions and magnificent churches. The spontaneity of the generous people add to the brilliant atmosphere you find in the city.
Sus gentes Las casas parecen lujosas
y no sólo es impresión... es una realidad que muchas son de las familias ricas del Valle del Cauca, que parece que se hubieran sentado a imaginarse como querían su ciudad, con iguales planos de moradas y magníficas iglesias. La espontaneidad de los Popayaneses contribuye a la bella atmósfera que se respira allí.
A date to forget After 6 major earthquakes, (the one in 1736 destroyed the town), March 31st, 1983 was a date that brought panic and death to the white city. A powerful earthquake of 5.6magnitude caused the death of about 250 people -crushed by the collapse of a church-, according to statistics and destroyed the historical centre and lots of houses. The sad destructive event occurred just before the procession of the holy week.

Luego de 6 terremotos principales, (el de 1736 destruyó la ciudad), el día 31 de marzo de 1983 fue un día en el que la ciudad blanca se vistió de mucho pánico y muerte. De una magnitud de 5.6, ocasionó la muerte de alrededor de 250 personas -que fueron aplastadas cuando colapsó una iglesia- de acuerdo a las estadísticas. El destructivo evento, que destruyó el
centro histórico, ocurrió justo antes de una de las procesiones de Semana Santa.
Not to be missed Some churches that you must visit are Iglesia de la Ermita, de San Francisco, and some colonial buildings that you encounter as you walk down the city The Town Centre is there to offer lovely walks and photos. No sooner had I arrived in the historical centre when I started having flashbacks of Giron in Santander, but after some walking, I realised it is not the same, Popayan is like Giron´s father. For once, the lamps look smarter, the houses taller and the city is bigger in size, to tell you the truth, walking there in the evening blew my socks off. The hotel was excellent as was the food.
No pueden dejar de visitar algunas de las iglesias como la Iglesia de La Ermita, la de San Francisco y otros edificios coloniales que encontrará al recorrer la ciudad. El Centro histórico le ofrecerá bellas caminatas y magníficas panorámicas para fotos de postal. Apenas llegué al centro, se me vino a la cabeza imágenes de Girón, en Santander, cuyo blog aparece aquí también; sin embargo, Popayan
parece ser el papá de la primera. Por un lado, las lámparas parecen más elegantes, las casas mas grandes e igualmente la ciudad; caminando allí fue superagradable y el hotel, pues ni hablar.

This renown procession is expected by thousands of people on the tv as you can admire the beautiful dozens of catholic churces or even walk as a parishioner, if you are there, that is. Prior to the event, the houses are bleached, sidewalks are repaired and signs pointing at the different venues for the process are carefully highlighted; In fact, I was quite taken by the sight of an office devoted to organising the Holy week which works during the whole year. That I call organisation.
La Semana Santa en Popayán es un evento magnífico con bellas procesiones, declaradas patrimonio cultural inmaterial de la humanidad por Unesco. No se sorprenda si de pronto en cualquier temporada del año, usted ve en algunos lugares propaganda anunciando la semana santa del nuevo año, pues es un evento muy organizado. Durante toda la semana, usted podrá presenciar desfiles muy bien organizados con miles de personas. No olvidemos que estamos en un país altamente católico y esta semana santa popayanesa se convierte en la segunda, luego de la de Sevilla.
Los pasos excelentemente representado nos recuerdan a los personajes más característicos de la pasión
de Cristo, los cuales son llevados en los hombros por hombres vistiendo trajes de nazarenos. Los que no pueden ir en Colombia, esperan las procesiones en sus televisores, pero con igual fervor tal y como si estuvieran en Popayán
Cuenta la leyenda que la primera procesión se organizó en 1558, lo cual nos devuelve a la fecha de su fundación y se nota que sus habitantes han luchado por preservar esa perfección en la organización. Antes del evento, las casas se vuelven a pintar, se arreglan las aceras y se colocan los afiches correspondientes a la información para los turistas. Me impresionó saber que tienen una oficina exclusivamente para la Semana Santa, que trabaja a lo largo de todo el año. A eso le llamo organización.
December´s lightings are also a great opportunity to admire the city. Another event, which I have never attended but it is quite renown in the country is the festival of religious music.
Los alumbrados de diciembre son también una gran oportunidad para admirar la ciudad. Otro evento, al cual nunca he ido, pero que es igualmente famoso en el país es el festival de música religiosa.
Food
Having been
declared patrimony of humanity by Unesco in 2005 thanks to the variety of its gastronomy. It is no secret that their traditional methods of cooking have been used throughout many years. Busy restaurants are proof of it, the staff are quite professional and if you consider the size of the dishes, in a restaurant you might ask for 1 dish instead of 2, if you know what I mean... You can also taste delicious snacks like the empanadas, tamales, brevas caladas, and the list is quite long.
Comida
NO es por nada que su gastronomía se ha declarado igualmente patrimonio de la humanidad por la Unesco en el 2005. No es secreto que se conservan procesos tradicionales de preparación de alimentos, famosos durante muchos años. Ahí están las colas en algunos restaurantes, que prueban de su celebridad, se es bien atendido y sirven suficiente como para que se esté seguro del deleite. También se encuentran deliciosos platos de refrigerio y pasabocas, como las empanadas, tamales, brevas caladas y ahí continúa la lista.

Finalmente, la ciudad es también muy estudiantil con su gran oferta para los futuros sabios gracias a sus 4 universidades. Hay diferentes programas de pregrado de donde escoger.
