This blog is a bit earlier than planned, but it is raining now and that is always a good day to do some writing. I thought about singing in the rain, but this seems a more productive way of spending my time. I'm in Cartagena, pearl in the crown of the former Spanish possession in the Americas. Nowadays surely one of the most beautiful cities in Colombia, though that is just guessing, since I have... Read Full Entry

San Blas Archipelago

Bounty Commercial!!!
What an idyll--swimming and snorkeling in warm water without a wetsuit! The voyage and islands sound lovely, and congratulations on surviving and thriving in a group and on a tour--something I too, avoid. I can imagine how lovely your own room in an almost-empty hostel must now be in gorgeous Cartagena. Layers of perfection!

San Blas Archipelago

Yes it is all good
The tour and the people and now the privacy. And Cartagena is amazing. The rest of Colombia beckons!

You will love colombia...
Good to see u made it to my favorite country. Cartagena IS awesome, but there are so many different places and climates and landscapes in Colombia. The people are awesome and so is the food so enjoy! Go to Salento in the mountains where the coffee is grown for some peaceful time and visit some local farms also. Good luck and buen Viaje! --Greg

Muchas Gracias!
Don't worry I will be going up that way as well. I will do as much as I can in the time I have.

The infamous Darien Gap
I hacked my way through the impenetrable jungles and assorted drug smugglers and guerrilla groups that call Darien their home -- after island hopping through the San Blas Islands, back in 2001. But you probably would have guessed that;-) Have fun in Colombia. It really is a jewel in the South American crown.

Obviously you did :)
But the question is,how much time did you have? And how big was your machete?
29th October 2014

How big was your machete?
I did have time - more time than money, that's for sure. But I'd rather not disclose the size of my machete.

Well Well Well
Tours, eh! Next you will be telling me that you are going on a luxury cruise! Your next blog better make up for this, otherwise I'm unsubscribing!
31st October 2014

Oh no!!
Tim the magnificent, I wouldn't want to anger or disappoint you again and certainly it would be the ruin of me if you unsubscribed so I promise not to take any tours forthwith!

San Blas
everybody here fascinated about columbia, i will read and see, but San Blas for me seems like paradise. wonder wonder, how is possible to find a sailing boat going there?
27th February 2015

Sailing boats
You can find sailing boats going to the San Blas islands and onwards to Colombia or Panama in either Panama City or Cartagena (Colombia). The hostels will advertise different sailing companies, but be careful, not all operators are good. There are captains out there that are terrible and the trip can be unsafe and horrible if you find yourself with the wrong company. So check before you decide, and ask other tourists for recommendations. Also if you just want to visit San Blas you can get boats to take you to one of the islands and stay on them for a while, the best place to arrange that would be in Panama City.

Olivia's Company?
Hi Ralf..I was taking another gander at this blog as I'm headed back for a 4th time in August and I've made the boat trip the opposite direction, but avoiding Puerto Obaldia would be ideal this time if I can and also having a few days in the islands! Do you remember any info about Olivia's company? prices? etc etc. Thanks in advance! Greg

Info on boat trip
The company is called San Blas Adventures, this is their website with all the info you need: http://sanblasadventures.com/. The tour itself costs 350 dollars, but count on around 500 dollars in total to get all the way to Cartagena, including extras. Hope this helps. Cheers, Ralf
