A Hymn to Nature: De Paseo por el Dulce Tenjo, el pueblo que enamora.

Located just a few minutes from Bogotá, you'll find this environmental gem called Tenjo, a destination full of color and sweet delights, which was nominated for those villages that captivate. According to what I've found on the internet, the name Tenjo, which evokes memories of a compatriot from Salazar, means 'in the Boquerón', (in the wide opening), but without further explanations. There are various ways to reach Tenjo; my friends and I chose the bus, a budget-friendly option at only $1.5, which we boarded at Portal 80. In just 20 minutes and after enduring 15 jolts on the bus, we found ourselves immersed in the beauty of this enchanting town.



A pocos minutos de Bogotá, se encuentra esta joya ambiental llamada Tenjo, una destinación llena de color y delicias dulces, que fue nominado como uno de los pueblos que más enamoran. Según lo que he averiguado en internet, el nombre Tenjo, que me evoca a una paisana de Salazar, significa 'en el Boquerón', pero sin más explicaciones, si las tienen, las recibo volontiers. Puedes llegar de diversas maneras; con mis amigos, optamos por la flota, que a solo $5500, logramos tomar en el Portal 80. Después de 20 minutos de relatos y 15 sacudones en el bus, nos vimos inmersos en la belleza de este encantador pueblo.



Carretera destapada




In Tenjo, founded in 1603, there's an athletic spirit in the air, with numerous routes dedicated to the handiest means of transport—bicycles—and vibrant activity in the farmers' markets. Downtown, the park sort of transported me to the picturesque towns of Tolima; indeed, it is quite reminiscent of El Espinal, with its readings of myths and legends of La Llorona, Mother Monte, and the Whistling Bird, so folklorically set in that square. Many cafes in this Cundinamarca village showcase its beautiful colorful orchids and extravagant flowers, which, I guess, have turned it into a heritage gem in the vicinity of the beautiful Bogotá. By the way, Tenjo is a highly appreciated destination for the "Bogotanos", who seek to take a break from the hectic life of the city, and I don't blame them.





En Tenjo, fundado en 1603, se respira un espíritu atlético, con numerosas rutas dedicadas al medio de transporte más práctico: las bicicletas, y una actividad vibrante en los mercados de agricultores. En el centro, el parque de alguna manera me transportó a los pintorescos pueblos de Tolima; de hecho, es bastante reminiscente de El Espinal, con sus lecturas de mitos y leyendas de La Llorona, la Madre Monte y el Pájaro Silbador, tan folklóricamente ubicados en esa plaza. Muchos cafés en este pueblo de Cundinamarca exhiben sus hermosas orquídeas coloridas y flores extravagantes, lo que, supongo, lo ha convertido en una joya patrimonial en las cercanías de la hermosa Bogotá. Por cierto, Tenjo es un destino muy apreciado por los Bogotanos, que buscan tomar un respiro de la vida agitada de la ciudad, y no los culpo.





Caves




Nos aventuramos a explorar las Cuevas de Tenjo, intentando convencernos de que estábamos completamente preparados para tal ejercicio. Sin embargo, en vez de entrar propiamente, –me alejó tanto murciélago y oscuridad– tuvimos que detenernos algunas veces para recuperar el aliento y comer los sabrosos sandwiches preparados por las atléticas escaladoras Yolamandas. Allí, nos encontramos a un señor muy amable, quien consintiendo bellamente a sus dos hijas muy atléticas, nos aconsejó escalar algunos lugares que requieren unas 2 a 3 horas de camino; bueno...por el momento, no tengo ni el tiempo ni la energía, pero sí talvez luego, lueguito, luego... habrá que hacer esas caminatas para respirar el puro aire y me gustaría mucho ir a la Peña de Juaica, que me dicen que es una montaña sagrada, donde seguramente se verán maravillas de fauna y flora.





We ventured to explore the Caves of Tenjo, trying to convince ourselves that we were completely prepared for such an exercise. However, instead of entering properly – bats and darkness scared me away so much – we had to stop a few times to catch our breath and eat the tasty sandwiches prepared by Yolamanda, the athletic hikers. There, we met a very kind gentleman who, while beautifully spoiling his two very athletic daughters, advised us to climb some places that require a 2 to 3-hour hike; well... for now, I don't have the time or the energy, but maybe later, a little later... we'll have to take those walks to breathe the pure air, and I would really like to go to Peña de Juaica, which they say is a sacred mountain where surely wonders of fauna and flora can be seen.





We need to go back



Definitivamente, como comprenderán mis queridos lectores de mi blog, Tenjo no es un destino para visitar en un solo día, como también logramos enterarnos luego. Las leyendas e historias nos sugieren que hay mucho por descubrir: el recorrido de los Muiscas, sus creencias, leyendas y adoraciones, el Bioparque de la Reserva, las serranías, casas ecológicas, los miradores, en fin...en fin...un canto a la naturaleza. El señor comentaba que para empaparse de todas estas hermosas tradiciones de la región, se recomienda dedicar al menos una semana, y poder practicar ese turismo de naturaleza con sus tantas caminatas por populares senderos, que hacen muy especial al pueblo. BIen, así que esto es solo el comienzo de mi aventura Tenjana, si se le puede llamar así, pero por algo a los escritores se nos permite esas creaciones literarias 😊 sorry para los nativos de estas tierras.



Definitely, as my dear readers of this blog will understand, Tenjo is not a one-day destination, as we hilariously discovered later on. The legends and tales suggest that there's a lot to uncover: the Muiscas' journey, their beliefs, legends, and worships, the BioPark of La Reserva, the mountain ranges, eco-friendly houses, viewpoints, well... in short... a hymn to nature. The gentleman suggested that to fully immerse yourself in all these beautiful regional traditions, it's recommended to dedicate at least a week and engage in the nature tourism with its many walks along popular trails, making the town truly special. Well, this is just the beginning of my 'Tenjan' adventure, if we can call it that, but hey, that's why writers are allowed these literary creations 😊 Sorry to the natives of these lands; blame it on the creative spirit!





Amistades y Gastronomy




Agradezco a Amandilla, Yolanda y al gran fotógrafo Mauro por guiarnos en una visita maravillosa al pueblo. Casi que visitamos las cuevas llenas de murciélagos, disfrutamos de un picnic con deliciosos sándwiches y exploramos restaurantes hasta encontrar el lugar donde nos sentimos cómodos y bien atendidos, con melodías de Franco de Vita a la carta. Debo decir que por lo que vimos, se ve que Tenjo también guarda secretos culinarios bajo la manga pues, se veían los restaurantes llenos y con harta variedad de platos. Con churrasco, pie de anca, café y mousse de maracuyá, compartimos conversaciones memorables sobre cambios actuales en condiciones de trabajo para muchos colombianos, cuidados de una buena dieta, y no sé por qué, pero resultamos hablando de ovnies. Igualmente, expresamos gratitud al Todopoderoso por la vida y compartimos recuerdos entre lo agradable y la no tan agradable pandemia.



I want to thank Amandilla, Yolanda, and the great photographer Mauro for guiding us on a wonderful visit to the town. We almost explored caves filled with bats, enjoyed a picnic with delicious sandwiches, and explored restaurants until we found a place where we felt comfortable and well taken care of, with personalized melodies from Franco de Vita. I must say, from what we saw, it seems that Tenjo also holds culinary secrets up its sleeve; the restaurants were bustling with a wide variety of dishes. With barbecue, beefsteak, coffee, and passion fruit mousse, we shared memorable conversations about current changes in working conditions for many Colombians, the importance of a good diet, and I don't know why, but we also talked about UFOs. We also expressed gratitude for life, and sharing memories amid the pleasant and not-so-pleasant aspects of the pandemic.





We will, queridos Tenjanos!




Sin duda, nos comprometemos a regresar algún día para sumergirnos aún más en sus ricas tradiciones. La impresionante explosión de colores en Tenjo refleja el arduo trabajo de sus habitantes para asegurar una experiencia encantadora al turista. Después de tanto colorido, uno no puede evitar querer volver, así que no sé cuando, pero de que retornamos, retornamos o como dijo Ruby Perez: "Volveréeeeeeeee, volveré, porque te quiero, hasta Tenjo, volveréeeee!"



Undoubtedly, we commit to returning someday to delve even deeper into its rich traditions. The impressive burst of colors in Tenjo reflects the hard work of its inhabitants to ensure a delightful experience for tourists. After so much vibrancy, one can't help but want to return, so I don't know when, but we are coming back, that's for sure.
