Smooth arrival, immigration and customs. Our guide Francesca was there to pick us up and take us to the hotel.

We had the afternoon to ourselves and had a good walk to and around the city square (Plaza de Armas), stopping at a street cafe for a snack. Later, after consulting TripAdvisor, we crossed the canal/river in an 800m walk to the Barrica 94 restaurant for dinner. It was excellent with a scrumptious variety of food and wine on offer, in pleasant surroundings.

Friendly, Kevlar-wearing constabulary. We saw some with horses, too.

Barrica 94 Wine Bar and Restaurant
Excellent food and the American-born Chilean manager spent a long time helping us choose a bottle of local wine. I had my favourite seared tuna with a Syrah and bacon sauce and Robyn a four-cheese empanadas plus a seafood salad. AUD $91, including the suggested 10% tip.

Bellavista Barrio (neighbourhood)
Restaurants surrounded this performance space, giving the area a warm, festive vibe.
