The next stop was a small village called Ritoque. It was the place where we were decided to chill and kick back. Leaving the city vibe and returned to beach style with surf on the door step. We took a local taxi from Vina and headed around the rocky headland for about 35kms to the town of Quintero. It was another 6km down a potholed track to our final destination of Ritoque beach and our accommodation of a surf hut. It was really great, the hut was with sea views and had all self catering facilities. Our host´s name was Ian was a sceptic who had lived over in Chile for the past twenty years, I asked him in our introduction where he was from and he replied that he did not believe in countries. Our final trek before, very reluctantly, leaving Chile. This national park is right near where Dan lives - in fact where about 80% of Chile's population of 16 million live. The area was visited by Darwin where he climbed La Compagna Mountain and found fish fossils at the top setting him off on the path to the theory of evolution. We didn't follow his example. The ecology is very different here to Herquehue about 750 miles southwards, and thus much hotter and drier. It is not true desert but classed as an intermdiate zone. The trees wre small and there were lots of huge cactuses plus the occasionl pretty flower. ... read more

Hello family and friends! Last night, we took a van ride (the driver was a friend of my Mom and Dad) to El Melon, which is just North of Santiago (about 60 miles). When we arrived it was 10:30PM. As soon as I got a chance, I flopped in bed and fell asleep. This morning I woke up, went next door (to the house of my Mom and Dad´s friends), and had breakfast. I had flavored Cheerios for breakfast, hockey puck bread (round wheat bread that's kinda hard), and orange juice. The breakfast was long and conversational, but I finished. Then I got up and went to the garage, which the family uses as a small grocery store! The family sells candy, vegetables, hockey puck bread, soda, chocolate milk, and that sorta stuff. After breakfast, we ... read more

Hope you all enjoyed the New Year celebrations wherever you were. We´d planned to celebrate in Valparaíso but when we arrived yesterday afternoon it was so hectic that we decided to retreat into the foothills of the Andes cordillera! There was no accommodation available in Valparaíso anyway, so people were camping, jam-packed like sardines, along the side of the motorway! Glad we gave it a miss because we´ve ended up in a village hotel with views of the peaks in the Cerro La Campana national park and guess what we were woken by on the first of January 2006? An earthquake!!! Only measured 3 on the Richter scale and, to a slumbering Jessie, felt like undulating massage pads in the mattress but it was enough to wake us! Apparently it´s quite unusual to be able to ... read more
