On Thursday, we signed up with a local company, Turistik, for the ride to the Coast to visit Pablo Neruda’s seashore home, Isla Negra. The tour offered the best of both worlds, the opportunity to see this Museum and, afterwards, a visit to a new organic winery in one of Chile’s youngest wine producing valleys, San Antonio. One of their vans was picking us up at 8:15 AM in front of the W Hotel, and taking us to their main depot area in the Parque Araucano Shopping Center to meet the vehicle designated for this particular tour. It is a well-organized enterprise that we had used in the past. The drive to Neruda’s house was heading south on the Costanera highway. It reminds me somewhat or the Florida’s Turnpike in that it has Toll stations along ... read more

Art, ocean, stone and wood, ocean, balconies and towers, ocean, rocks, shells and ocean. Ocean--the real reason that Pablo Neruda and I loved this house. Not really an island, Isla Negra is perched on a cliff above the crashing Pacific and an amazing colony of boulders. Pablo Neruda's house, which he named Casa de Isla Negra, was as eccentric and colorful as he. Neruda was a collector of all things nautical and a lover of beauty and the ocean (as long as he wasn't on it) and had filled every corner of his house inside and out with savory treasures. The Nobel-prize winning Chilean poet had built three houses, and for both of us, Isla Negra was our favorite, undoubtedly because it was right on the ocean. The poet and his third wife and true love, ... read more

Geo: -33.2042, -71.705Today I woke up, hopeful of a better day, and an even better tomorrow. But then I looked in the mirror - still hideous! As I showered, I was concerned at the alarming rate of skin loss from my face - I was worried that I would clog the shower drain ...At least I came up with a plan to treat my face - but unfortunately, I can't buy the required tools, because I don't know the Spanish words for "bench grinder" and "sandblaster". But seriously, the only things more horrific than my face are these Pablo Neruda translations! Depending on the translator, some of the English versions can sound beautiful. But it's disappointing when you read a brilliant verse in Spanish followed by the English version that sounds like it was written by ... read more

Dear the internet, I´m sorry I haven´t written in quite some time. I bet you´re wondering what I´ve been up to. *I discovered a really awesome vegetarian restaurant in Santiago! It´s called "El Huerto" (The Garden) and it´s fantastic. They have lots of different world foods, like Mexican, Italian, and Indian, and obviously everything´s vegetarian, so it´s all good! My favorite is definitely a dish called the Nuevo México that has a black bean burrito, a quesadilla, rice, lettuce, tomato, and the best guacamole ever. They also have amazing jugo de limón con menta (lemonade with mint). I wish I could transport this place back to the United States with me. *Right after my last entry, we went to Isla Negra and Pomaire for the day (Friday). First we visited Pablo Neruda´s house in Isla Negra, ... read more

We went for a long walk to the city to the North of Isla Negra, El Quisco. it was a hopping place seeing as how it is New's Years Eve and that is a BIG holiday in Chile. They say that Christmas is for children and New Year's is for the adults in Chile. I think I could watch the Pacific rollers coming in for hours. We stopped at the fish market and noticed that they were selling bags of lemons and they are selling my favorite Chilean fish-- Congrio A little further they were selling clams by the kilo. A little further they were guys opening the clams so you could eat them raw with a little (lot) of lemon juice. So of course I had to try it!!!!! So I go to the ... read more

Wow--Planes, Trains, and Autobuses and we are finally here. The flight went off without a hitch, we even managed to get some sleep on the all night flight from Dallas! We went Minnesota snow and landed in 68 degree midsummer weather with the geraniums blooming and hopes for a wonderful time. We passed customs without any problem, got a bus to take us to the central bus station and that is where our un poco español started to cause problem we buy our tickets, board the bus, ride to the end of the line, and THIS DOES NOT LOOK LIKE A BUS STATION!!!!! So I try to ask the driver as the passengers disperse in all directions where the bus station is and he says 3 blocks, failing to mention the direction. We we find a ... read more

Vad toppen! Tänne tuli kolme ruotsalaista toimintaterapeuttia tekemään kolmen kuukauden työharjoittelupestiään. Ihan mukavilta vaikuttavat. -Muutenkin noi... read more

Now that Steve is back (YEAH!!), we’ve reevaluated our options and have decided to return to Albuquerque in January, in time for the boys to go to school for the last semester. We had a couple different plans for how this trip would play out. Returning in January follows Plan B (sort of), which was to just travel for the first 6 months and then settle in somewhere in February when the school year starts here. But various factors - Steve’s job, the boys’ schooling, missing Stella, and more—have made us decide to scrap this second part of the plan. (Plan A was to live in one place the whole year and use it as a base from which to travel throughout the year). It’s a little sad to think of leaving already because we have ... read more
