Valparaiso and Santiago, Chile This started out as a long day for us and got even longer ;-) We had to be ready to go at 5:50am, which we were. Bleary-eyed we headed to our tour meeting place to be told that they were having trouble with cranes on the dock that needed to be moved before the Ruby Princess could dock, so they were moving the time to 6:30am. Fine, time for another cup of coffee; International Café, here we come. At 6:20am there was an announcement that the crane that needed to be moved (you know those gigantic cranes on docks that move the huge cargo containers around), was broken and they had to get someone to fix it or push it out of the way….hummm. We were told to please be patient one ... read more

More than a year ago, our friends Sheryl and Mike invited us to join them on a holiday to Chile. Sheryl did a huge amount of research and organised the trip. I am sharing my notes and some photos on this blog. We hope you enjoy the journey. February 17 - Tuesday - SANTIAGO We flew to Santiago via Auckland. There were a few little dramas leaving Sydney, but made our plane, using the express line to board. (One of the names had been incorrectly spelt on the ticket, which was corrected after much to-ing and fro-ing, and a cost of $80.) Flying in over Chile, we saw mountains and volcanoes rising up through the clouds - our first glimpse of the huge mountains which form the back bone of the country. A transfer vehicle took ... read more

Geo: -33.4691, -70.642Have had a very lazy day, walking along the river with no water and back into provodencia where we found the coolest pub to chill out. Have taken loads of pics of the random roaming dogs of Santiago that I'm convinced they know when to cross these manic roads. The cats don't fair as well.now back at our hotel for the 5 hour walking tour. Ain't doing that after the 50+ kms Chris and I have done already. Saving our knees for cycling the Maipo valley wine region in the morning.have the necessary stuff packed. Band aids, sun screen, water and hay fever tablets.looking forward to it.we are chilling in the courtyard.... read more

Geo: -33.4691, -70.642Another great day. Fabulous weather and views to die for. Plan of action today is shopping in South americas biggest mall and I mean big! Just needed some clothes really but the designer stores had their sales on so I now have 3 nice tops to rough it in.we realised today that Santiago has one thing perth don't. It's called lack of flies and it's just wonderful not to be bothered by those annoying filth ridden bugs.have walked at least 20km today taking in the sights and the gorgeous weather. Plenty more dogs, in fact they are everywhere and of course great food and vino... read more

I then studied about the changes which took place in the 18th century in America and Chile, due to the reforms carried out by the Bourbons. The church began losing its importance. The church carried on living alongside the Bourbon dynasty, new buildings were built in the Neoclassical style, rather than Baroque. This was what is know as the Golden Period, when the elite began using the estancias as a means of getting rich. The elite they would recruit immigrants who would work on their land and make money for their businesses, and prosper from the agriculture stemming from the land of the Estancias.... read more

After a good nights’ sleep I made my way to the National Historic Museum which had just reopened last Tuesday after being closed for 2 months. It was the best place to learn about Chile’s history. I learned a lot about the Mapuche tribes in the Art Museum but here I learnt a bit more about the other tribes who lived in Chile alongside the Mapuche. They lived in different regions such as Chinchorro,Arica, Aymaras, Changos, Atacamenos, El Molle and Diaguitas. I find learning about their lifestyles fascinating mainly because they adapted their lifestyles so well to the geographical areas of Chile which they had inhabited. A lot of the museums in Santiago have shown the lifestyles of the indigenous tribes through displaying objects found in archaeological digs.... read more
