the view from the hotel room
Having just arrived in MVD, I was already sent even further away from home on a short business trip – 1 night in yet another hotel bed, a nice one though - to meet our new colleagues in...

Santiago, which is the capital of Chile (520 m above sea level) and was founded in 1541. The city is shaped by lots of hills around the city and the imposing Andes mountains which can be seen from most points in the city.

Santiago's economic growth is obvious all over the place, it is a modern and booming metropolis. The city is home to a lot of restaurants, shopping centers, theaters, and even has a subway.

The rising skyline, including the tallest building in Latin America, the Gran Torre Santiago is very impressive.

I felt home in an instant, which was a very strange feeling - after all we are talking about “the end of the world” in many respects. I like the atmosphere, the people, just everything - well that is not true the old town where the cathedral is located was not as nice.

As a true Swiss I like green balconies with lots of plants – but I think I have never seen so many balconies full of plants – it seems fair to call it the green city. Well that is unfortunately not the whole story, there is a big issue with pollution, due to thermal inversion (a weather phenomenon whereby a stable layer of warm air holds down colder air close to the ground). And seeing all the SUV's and Beemers and other brand new European cars (you name them), it is clear where the problem comes from.

Flying in and out over the Andes is awesome - it almost feels like you could touch the snow on tip of the mountains.

Unfortunately I had only very little time to explore the city but I will be back (maybe even for snowboarding).

Love P.
