So during the weekend just after Boxing Day, I think I was a busy as I’ve ever been before. Getting all my stuff together for a 4 month trip away in South America isn’t the easiest thing to do especially when Carla also wants me to bring a hundred and one different things that she either forgot or couldn’t fit into her suitcase 😊
Once my sister Mel had picked me up and I was on my way to the airport, things were a lot calmer as the packing was finally done and I was on my way to the trip of a lifetime, even if it was still 24 hours till I actually arrived. The plane journeys were quite tiring, how anybody can get a decent amount of sleep on a plane I’ll never know, I managed it once but that was mainly due to the magical mix of a couple of beers and a sleeping pill (I’m not recommending anyone ever does that though obviously).
It felt like I’d managed an hour or two at most when I arrived in Brazil and then due the masterminds who plan flight schedules/connections, I
had 20-30 minutes to change terminal to catch my connecting flight to Santiago. So I got my jog on and made it with about 5 minutes to spare and then was just about 4 hours away from finally being in Chile, so I just relaxed, listened to music, ate what felt like the 7th meal that had been put in front of me since I got on the first plane and just waited to finally arrive.
Once I arrived and stepped off the plane, I instantly felt the change in temperature. I was dressed for winter in England and had arrived for the start of summer in Chile. I’m guessing that it couldn’t have been far off 30°C, so I just wanted to get out of the stuffy airport but had to go through the Immigration process, to my surprise they didn’t seem too bothered that I was going to be in Chile for 4 months and didn’t ask a single question, can’t imagine the people at UK Immigration doing the same 😊
So once I headed for my luggage I finally saw Carla for the first time in a month as she knocked on the glass from
the viewing/waiting area on the floor above. So I grabbed my bags and headed to go and meet her and her cousin Pamela and as so as we were reunited, we jumped straight onto another bus started the 2 hour trip south to Rengo to stay with Carla’s Auntie, Uncle and Cousins for the night before we head north 7 hours to spend New Years in La Serena.
When we arrived in Rengo, it was officially 36°C, it said so on an electronic information board in the town square. Carla was finding it unbearable, I however was soaking it up and as soon as we arrived at here Aunties house in Rengo, I wasted little time getting into the garden and enjoying my first beer in Chile. I had about 24 hours to do a bit of relaxing until the travelling begun again tomorrow.
