After finally arriving in La Serena we now had to get everything for our New Years Eve Gathering/Celebrations which we were going to be doing a Beach-side apartment we were renting for just a couple of days from the 31st December till the 2nd of January.
We had all of Carla's family (apart from her mum who was in England) coming over which meant there would be 12 of us inside of a small apartment which wasn't going to be easy, especially as we were going to be having a sit down meal. We arranged the seating which just about fitted with a cramped table of eight and we brought in the table from the balcony to make another table of four.
So we bought plenty of booze, most of Carla's family thought we bought too much, but a fair bit of it got polished off by the end of the night. Everyone arrived about 9pm and once everyone was in attendance we had our meal, which wasn't as cramped as I originally thought, I actually had elbow room which was an unexpected delight.
After dinner it was pretty much time to get
our arses in gear to go and watch the fireworks on the beach which would kick off the moment midnight came. So we poured the champagne ready into 12 glasses and carried them up to the apartment roofs to watch the fireworks from there, however it turned out the view from the top of the apartment block was at best, crap, so with about 5 minutes to spare we did a quick run down to the ground floor so we could watch the fireworks from the apartment's front garden.
We got there with about 2 minutes left, so as soon as the clock struck midnight, we did the hugs and kisses, knocked back the champagne and watched the fireworks war between La Serena beach and the beach of its neighbouring town Coquimbo. We were routing for La Serena but they were actually quite rubbish only doing about 1 firework per 2 minutes, whereas Coquimbo put on a majestic display that was a pleasure to watch.
After the fireworks had finished we headed back up to the apartment to carry on celebrating/drinking. Although we thought we would party until 7am (Chilean style) at around 2am everyone was starting to
look tired and at 2:30am when I went to put the camcorder on charge in our room and I never made it back. Everyone who was left wasn't far behind either.
All in all it was a top New Years and the next day once we had tidied up, everyone came back over for a New Years Day lunch and we just enjoyed the rest of our day and a half in the apartment.
