Happy Holidays from South America! As many of you know, I have been traveling through South America for 6 months now. If you've been following my blog, you have been sharing in all my experiences and following along on my adventures vicariously. Thank you for your readership and wonderful comments. They help me feel connected back home, and I have cherished each and every one. For those of you who wonder, hey, what the heck has Tana been up to this year?, I am including the highlights here. On December 14th, I will be joining a month long tour through Patagonia. I am happily looking forward to a break where I can sit back and relax for a bit with some company. Straddled the Ecuator
Rafted down the Rio Napo
Bathed in a waterfall
Been preened
by a cappuchin
Pecked by a macaw
Petted an ocelot
Watched the sunset over the River Barantillo by hammock
Walked through virgin jungle in the rain
Shared a bathroom with a scorpion and a lunchroom with a tarantula
Tried a rainforest hallucenogenic
Thatched a roof
Consulted a shaman
Tried a sweat lodge ceremony
Kissed a dolphin
Swam with crocodiles, pink river dolphins and pirahna
Been ravaged by sand flies, mosquitos and bed bugs (yuck!)
Soaked in hot springs
Heard the rumblings of an active volcano
Stayed with an Ecuadorian family while studying Spanish
Had surgery in a third world country
Been stranded in Caracass, Venezuela, a country I never intended to visit!
Hiked around snow capped mountains at 15,000 ft
Climbed a glacier
Had 2 bouts of food poisoning
Been ripped off by a street changer
Given false money
Snorkled with sea lions
Been hissed at by a jaguarundi, licked by a sheep
Lived without electricity
Rode on a chicken bus with sheep on the roof
Climbed a 100 meter tower to gaze over the rainforest canopy
Rode on Amazonian rivers by canoe at night
Went seeking out crocodiles and anacondas
Watched wooley monkeys play in trees
Been butted by
an ornary goat
Stroked a toucan and a grey winged trumpeter
Watched shrimpers go out in reed boats
Toured ancient crypts
Climbed Machu Picchu and Wayna Picchu
Mountain biked down a volcano
Visited giant turtles
Rode on the roof of a train
Sand boarded and sand buggied through dunes
Got stuck on a stinky broken down bus for 18 hours
Crossed over the highest naviable lake in the world
Got dressed up in traditional clothing and went dancing
Visited the witches market in La Paz and saw llama fetuses for sale
Met a puma
Crawled around Bolivian mines in the highest city in the world
Blew up dynamite
Munched on coca leaves
Held baby monkeys
Walked on islands made of reeds
Volunteered at 2 animal sanctuaries and one conservation project in the Amazon
Crossed 4 borders and visited 5 countries
Been left behind by a tour bus and lied to by countless other tour and bus companies
Had my camera stolen by monkeys and then dropped from a 100 ft tall tree
Crossed the largest salt plain on earth
and Befriended every cat along the way
