On Thursdays, I don't have any classes in the afternoon, so I took a nice long much needed siesta. After that I was ready to prepare dinner for the family and guests. We've been talking about me preparing something, and Francisca suggested I do it on the day we had 2 guests to sample it too. I needed a couple things at the grocery store first though so I gladly spent a little time there. It's seemingly never busy! I did go at a later hour though today and as a result, I ran into several students. One of them was picking up a shift of bagging groceries. The highlight of my trip however was walking down the aisles singing and dancing to my favorite Latino pop star, Juanes, sing over the speakers. I tried to ... read more

I visited the Presbyterian Church that both Cristian and Narciso attend. Cristian gave me a ride and introduced me to literally every single person there - like 50 people. The church was small, so we filled it up pretty well. It was a nice little building: one large room with wood paneled walls, wooden beamed ceilings that came together at the center aisle, and wooden pews. At the alter was a poster of sheep in a green field with mountains in the backdrop. I was observant of my surroundings because I had a really hard time understanding anything that was said. Narciso tried to help me understand the message, giving me bits and pieces in English. He even owns a bible with both Spanish and English translations which he lent me. The music however, was perfectly ... read more

Despite being perturbed that I was basically stood up for a meeting with the principal, it was again a pleasure getting to speak with Cristian for that hour. It seems like whenever I have a little downtime, he's always there to chat. He told me that there are two other blondes in town that look exactly like me, but we speak very differently. Apparently they have a very strong American accent that Cristian replicated for me - hilarious. We also talked with a few others about Religion. Apparently religious practice is quite common here. I have been asked on multiple occassions, do you have a religion? And I have been pleasantly surprised when they recognize Metodista. On my way out of school, I ran into Narciso with whom I visited for probably an hour. When they ... read more

Slept in finally!! Later, Maria Gloria and I went to the Feria, or farmers' market of sorts. Here in Conti, it is set up every day, every season. It was full of interesting foods and things for sale. Lots of fruits and vegetables including the biggest celery I have ever seen in my life! Like 2+ feet long and very full. We traveled to Talca again for the weekend and this evening, grandma and two daughters sat around the table chopping and trimming one such celery stalk. It probably took them a half hour to do it. On our way home from the market, we stopped by the little corner store next to the apartment that sells fresh bread. I couldn't resist trying a roll because the smell permeates the air, all the way up through ... read more

I got to participate a little more today - calling roll and doing a short activity with the song L-O-V-E. I don't know how I'm going to learn all of the students' names (there are like 300), but I'll do my best! The activity seemed quite successful as the kids really got into it and of course, they enjoyed me singing to them. I had a great time watching them at the end of class and between classes. They're all a buzz! For one class, they left the room and 3 or 4 were playing their guitars before they got out the door. Then another class, having talked about "extraordinary" during the singing activity called out to me "Miss! You're extraordinary!" Made my day :) The lounge serves as every teacher's desk (I know - just ... read more

There was a quiz planned for today, so I didn't get to observe but one class of activities. I found that yes - kids are the same. I gave a short introduction of myself to which the class was a buzz after every statement I made. I waited and they thankfully quieted down. During the lessons however, the noise level was much higher than my comfort level. I hope that I can work out a style that works for everyone. Sayuri, Carlos (the other English Teacher), the Conductor, and I met over tea and cookies to discuss the plans for my time here. Sayuri's class waited under supervision until we returned like 20-30 minutes late. Apparently, I'm going to be interviewed next week for the local television station. That should be interesting! I also learned that ... read more

I walked to school the couple blocks with Maria Gloria. Upon entering, I began introductions with every faculty in sight. Maria Gloria proceeded to clock in the old fashion way: with a punch card and clock. Beyond that was the office where I spent much of the morning waiting for Sayuri and Narciso to make the trip to Talca. It was a pleasure speaking with Janet, the secretary though. She served me tea and cookies while I waited. Seems like she and everyone else are concerned about obesity here in Chile. She didn't seem to think much of American obesity though which surprised me. Narciso also took some time to show me around the school and while doing so, he explained the earthquake evacuation drill. We practiced it somewhat too. "Walk! Speed! Walk... speed!" he said ... read more

Awoke early to go to church with Maria Gloria and 3 other women in the family. It was finally much cooler outside which turned out not to be the best thing because for this special day, we began the service outside at a circular gathering area with a few benches in the middle of town. Around 100 people were there as we began the service with rosemary, olive, and palm branches waving and singing to a chorus of 6 guitars. We then proceeded to march and sing towards the church building that we crammed full. I continued to enjoy the music in the service. The speaking is still a little difficult for me to understand. Come to find out though, the priest is Brazilian and he has spent the past year here in the church and ... read more

Absolutely amazing! After a week and a half of orientation over which all 50 of us travel bugs became closer than we could have ever imagined, everyone parted ways. I left the hostel with several others- that is Cody, Valeria, Kirby, Justine - around 12:30 today and then took the bus to Talca. Coming into town we could see earthquake destruction and a bit of a rundown appearance. The area has greenery but it's also a bit dusty too. It wasn't quite like driving to Bishops. I exited the bus and soon after I received a greeting, "Emelia?" and Maria Gloria was the first one to find me. Warm and friendly, it was a great first encounter. The Spanish came pretty freely between us, and I was very surprised. Soon after, I met Francisca, my "sister." ... read more

First, I am not in Talca, but Curico. It is so far off the blog and gringo trail that I cannot find its location to list. So, off to the fiesta in Curico around 50 mins south from Santa Cruz. The owners of weekend and wine/hostel puerto Lindo 134 Oakpass/Ruble are quite lovely. They speak no English but with my limited Spanish told them what I wanted to achieve this weekend and once they got it, it was plain sailing. So, bus to Curico. Riding through the vineyards of Chile on a public minibus, grapes to the left and right as far as the eye could see. As I said, Curico itself is well off the gringo trail. A normal working town, very grey and not much to report. The whole town square had been taken ... read more
