We travelled from Santiago to La Serena. It was a long day on the Pan American Highway. We arrived about 5:30 at our campsite near the beach and we stayed at the hippo camping grounds. Nothing too exciting, but it was clean. Next day we explored La Serena. It seemed like quite a nice little town until the bus loads of american tourists arrived from the cruise ship in harbour. Literally hundreds. We found some lovely markets and a great museum.

The Archaeological Museum is great to browse around. Nothing is english so won't take long. The best exhibition is that of the moai from Easter Island. Other exhibits include skeletons, and other artifacts from around La Serena. If you have some time to spare it is worth doing.

We were surprised to find a great japanese garden there also. Well kept with ducks and swans and a heron who posed for some photos. The beach looked very inviting but it was overcast so we didn't hang around and do any sunbathing.
