Last day in Pucon. Lazy day for me. A group of people went rafting but because I'd done it in Banos, I stayed behind and saved my money for something I'd never done before. Got told off by the receptionists for using the internet for too long, after waiting over an hour for the person before me to get off it - a 15 minute rule that only applies when they don't want to use the computer to play card games. Ha. I then went for a walk to try and find Sarah who, with Mike, had caught us up in Pucon! But failed. After hanging around the hostel and doing nothing more interesting than eating last night's leftovers for lunch, I decided to go on another mission to find Sarah and just happened to bump ... read more

Up for a 7am pick up to the active volcano - Mount Villarrica. I'd like to tell you a little about the journey but unfortunately, I was asleep for all of it. Since starting to travel, I have discovered this amazing ability to fall asleep anywhere, any time. It's a gift! One that I hope not to lose. Upon reaching the volcano, we gathered all of our stuff together, were given an ice-pick and told that we should try to stay together but may have to split into a fast and slow group. No prizes for guessing which group I ended up in! (And just in case you can't guess, it's the slow one.) We took the chairlift up the first part to save time and energy and luckily I was sitting with David (our new ... read more

Pucon! A very pretty little town not to be missed, overlooked by the active volcano Mount Villaricca. We arrive and are taken to our new accommodation which is a little house- with a kitchen! I was really tired and and really missing my old group and really didn't feel like doing much. But I then end up going canopying (swinging from trees on a wire like zip lining.) As with most things, I was utterly useless at it. And especially when one guy, I think his name was Nico, was waiting to unhook us on the next tree. On the first try, I actually made it to the other side as I did on the second attempt. But on the next turn, I almost made it across but started to drift back in the opposite direction. ... read more

I highly recommend spending the $90 USD to climb Villarica volcano if the weather conditions are good. The challenging 6 hour hike using crampons and ice pick on the glacial peak rewards you with spectacular views of surrounding volcanoes and the opportunity to toboggan down a glacier! Unfortunately, we were 1 hour from the top and the volcanic fumes were blowing in our direction and forced us to turn back. For those travellers debating on how this compares to the $20 USD tour of Pacaya volcano in Guatemala which allows you to walk directly on the red hot lava, I think the experience is completely different, just try it! For the unlucky people that have to turn back because of bad weather conditions, there is a black lava sand beach with views of the smouldering volcano ... read more

Hola amigos! Picking up where we left off.....following about 15hrs of busing broken up briefly by an overnight stay in a city called Valdivia we reached Pucon. Pucon is a super popular summer vacation spot for people from all over Chile but especially the capital city, Santiago. We had been promised sun and warm temperatures (AKA the complete opposite of the past 4 weeks). Unfortunately upon arrival, although not to our surprise, it was raining again (if I sound a bit worn down from the rain......it's because we were!). Like I said, since this is a super popular time of the year for Pucon, we spent a good chunk of time on arrival walking around in the rain looking for a hostel. After finally finding a place, luckily enough that ended up being a great hostel ... read more

Hola mis amigos! Ok so it´s been a little while til I got round to it, but now I will write everything... you have been warned! and its ok if you just want to look at the pictures instead! I am currently in a town called Pucon in the Chilean Lake District, after having travelled through southern Argentina and Chile- aka Patagonia (aka the middle of nowhere!). Jan and Feb is peak tourist season in Patagonia as its summer, and because Patagonia is so far south, it is just impossible to travel through or access in winter. This is unusual for me becuase normally I end up at places at the worst time of year, so I have done well! Apart from the fact that peak season= many tourists= high prices= booked up transport!! So anyway, ... read more

... read more

We are officially on the road. After a ridiculous hectic day finishing up everything on Thursday in Santiago, we hopped on an overnight bus to Pucon to meet up with about 40 other Couchsurfers for a camping weekend outside of Pucon, the adventure capital of Chile! Rita and I decided to upgrade for the overnight bus and got Cama tickets (which means, bed). This was about as first class as I have ever seen a bus get, hope someday I can try the "premium" category. We got some sleep overnight in our luxurious bus seats and were a bit drowsy when we arrived in Pucon on Friday morning. We ran over to an internet cafe for a minute because when we arrived we realized that no one had written down the directions on how to get ... read more
