We left Bariloche at 9am just as the sun was rising (no daylight saving here!), and set off across the Andes and across the border to Chile. A test for my new passport - would they let me leave Argentina without an entry stamp? What would I do if they wouldn't? Well after running off with my lovely new passport for 10 minutes the officer returned, stamped it, and handed back. Even easier when entering Chile, barely gave it a second glance. No problems, but now my pretty passport is covered with dirty stamps again. We finally reached Pucon at 7pm at night, after a brief sojourn in the delightful Orsorno bus station for a couple of hours. We had planned to stay in the local Hostel International, but as we started to leave the bus ... read more

The Moreno Glacier was going to be hard to beat but nevertheless we went on in search of natural wonders and new cultures, Chile did not disappoint. The drive from El Calafate to Puerto Natales was pretty hairy, over mountains on a snow covered road, at night and in a very small bus. In true South American fashion nothing fazed the driver and we arrived safe and sound to a very cold and quiet Natales. Searching for a hostel was not so easy - most were closed as this was the low season. Eventually we came across Magallania - run by a very laid back guy. It comprised a few bunks, lounge, kitchen and dirty shower. We only stayed one night but the guy was so nice we felt a little bit bad so made up ... read more

Together with our firends, after the ferry, we got a bus further North (5 hours) to Pucon in Chile. It was refreshing being in Chile, we had a new currency to play with (which for some reason I was particularly excited about), and the food is a little different. Travelling in a pack (9 of us from the boat) soon became lucrative as you can haggle prices down when there is a big group. So it worked really well, especially as they were all good company. Pucon is a little town sitting right next to a LIVE volano called Villarrica. Another first for us! a real life volcano! Remember those drawings we all did in geography lessons? well thats what it looks like ...... a perfect cone shape and snow capped. Have to say it was ... read more

Hey Everybody, As some of you may know two weeks ago I left Costa Rica and Los Parra for Chile from where me and Laura, now reunited plan to travel across South America until 12th August. I arrived two days before her, spending my time exploring Santiago - the very european capital of Chile - slightly nicer than San Jose. Not much to note from these two days other than this park that I went to full of ridiculously over the top couples all over the place, a slightly different spanish accent, a man who claimed he was a medical student, asked for money but I slyly snuck off . On May 3rd at 7.50 I arrived at the airport and after a waiting for what seemed like hours out stepped Laura - was fantastic but ... read more

DEUTSCH WEITER UNTEN / GERMAN FURTHER DOWN Do you know that feeling when you really don’t know what to do next and even though everybody is telling you about that place that you must NOT miss all you feel like is doing NOTHING? But then the weather turns out to be perfect, absolutely spotless and really warm considering it’s already autumn and you think that it is an absolute waste to actually DO nothing. With exactly that feeling I managed (don’t know how really) to get out of bed at 6.00 am on a bl...cold morning (fegawdsake, that when you’re travelling????), wait for that Bus for 20 minutes almost freezing to death thinking that I probably missed it and then endure 40 minutes of the most miserable dirt track I’ve ever come across. At the Park ... read more

13/4/06 - 15/04/06 Crossed into Chile, passing by the footsteps of volcano Lanin, 3800metres high, and bordering both argentina and chile. Pucon, the adventure capital of Chile. was travelling with 3 others at this point...its like that in south america. most people are independent travellers. we were Aussie, English, American and Israeli!!! We woke at 3am to start climbing the Villarica volcano at 4am!!! this is the second highest mountain in the region, still active and is demanding at a height of 2800metres. so at 4am, 15of us, guided in the dark with our headlamps on and 5 layers of clothing, we begin to hike up the mountain. in the darkness, the fiery red peak of the volcano is most visable... reminiscent of something you would see in Lord of The Rings ...Mt Mordor! along the ... read more

On our first trip to Thermas de Ancamil, Mandy had this overwhelming feeling that Flor was in need of some serious emotional support. After our first night there, while I was putting away the tent, Mandy decided to just wander and see if she could find anything that we could do for her. After an hour or so Mandy came back as excited as can be, "She needs a new back door, all she has is nailed up boards that doesn't open, and it lets in tons of cold air." I began to get excited at this news as well. Finally it was something right up my alley, and working for a few days at this incredible place would be a best case scenario. I told Mandy I´d go take a look. My head began ... read more

I climbed a volcano! First I must say it´s amazing how much you can get out of a 3 day weekend! On Thursday night, Laura, Paco and I got on a bus to Pucon, 10 hours or so south of Santiago, our only plans being to climb this volcano, Volcan Villarica. Kelsey, Jack, Thomas and Manu were leaving at the same time too, and while we were confident that our bus would win the race down, they beat us by a good half an hour. Anyway, while waiting at the bus stop, this random guy Scott came up to us and started telling us about all these deals he knew about and all these great places to go to in Chile.. right before we got on the bus he handed us a flyer for a hostel ... read more

It wasn´t going to be a long trip- just a few days in the country, taking in the Chilean countryside, bathing in their ever popular natural thermal baths, and relaxing. It felt great to be at the wheel of our own vehicle, masters of our own destiny, not limited by bus routes and tour operators. We promised ourselves to avoid tourist traps and take the road less traveled. We visited some waterfalls and breathed in the country air, so fresh and clean that even Lichen thrives in this corner of the earth. We were half a day into our adventure, when we decided it was time to head to the hotsprings. A highly recommended establishment was on our list, so we headed in that direction. Upon arrival, we were disappointed. The buildings looked like a poor ... read more
