Yes, that´s right, I climbed a volcano. But let´s start at the beginning. I arrived in Pucon on Feb 7, straight off the night bus from Santiago. I looked around to try to find a cheap place than the one I had reserved and my first impression was that this was an unpaved, ugly town. I couldn´t have been more wrong. It is the most posh town I have seen anywhere, including at home. It reminds me of a cute little town in Maine with outlet shopping, everything is beautiful and expensive and snobby. No wonder my friend recommended it and lived here several months - suits him perfectly. Anyway, it is in a perfect location too - lakes all around, an active volcano, beautiful. I ended up finding a place in a ¨hostal¨AKA some lady´s ... read more

After Pitchilemu..I decided to try some hitchhiking!! First impression was great!! I was offered a place to sleep at the end of the day in a place with a swimmingpool (Yeah ofcourse I used it) and had a great meal there!! And the next day went pretty fast as well so I arrived in Pucon. There I met Bob and Alwin again. We all thought first of staying here only a couple days..but we kept postphoning leaving the place because we had too much fun. The second day we climed the volcano Villarica, It was awesome to see the lava from upclose...But the Sliding down in the snow was the highlight of the day!! the ascent was a bith thougher because we did't get that much sleep the night before (no it was not to late, ... read more

I could just about crack it for a few bars of “The Happy Wanderer” Is it just the lack of oxygen? I don’t think so, there must be something more….but everyone is so cheerful! Along the road the road workers grin and wave, a gaucho herding some horses along the river bank waves his hat, I almost expect him to pull out a colt 45 and fire a few shots into the air, backpackers waiting patiently by the road wave and smile, call out greetings, cyclists nod or wave, depending if they’re on the ascent or descent, at every stop along the way people wave and smile…it goes on and on… We decided to Puc off and head for Pucon, just a short trip, couple of hundred kms but the most amazing scenery again. Firstly, out ... read more

See some movies associated with this blog Another trip across the Andes (including a torturous hour and a half getting through the border control), and we arrived back in Chile again to take on a challenge that we feared would be both expensive and unsuccessful. On the Argentinian side of the border (the quick part) we stopped by the side of Volcan Lanin. A huge volcano (12,389 feet) which is fortunately inactive. After looking around for accommodation in Pucón (it's expensive, but so is all of Chile for budget travellers), we found a cabin about 12km out of town that was the same price as the cheaper accomodation in the centre of town. It was a very nice place, situated on a farm run by a German guy and his Chilean wife and 2 kids. On ... read more

So just got back to Santiago from my 3 day adventure in Pucon, 10 hour bus ride south of Santiago. the whole aim of the trip was to climb an active Volcano and get out and see a bit of Chile´s bonito countryside. unfortunately and probably to mums satisfaction, the weather was too wet to climb. But for those headed to the south of Chile oneday Pucon is a cute little town with plenty of cool stuff to do. I arrived by bus at around 8 am and started solo wandering thru rain into town to find a hostel, food, coffee and cigarette. (a backpackers daily chores) Turned out the town didn´t open until 10 am. killed a bit of timing reflecting on life, thinking where my bro would be right this instant and how my ... read more

Welcome to Chile´s Lake District, a spectacular glacial landscape of sheer mountains, rolling valley floors and (least surprisingly of all) a multitude of beautiful lakes. Like Bolivia, Chile has a variety of terrains. We have been up high in the Andes, scorched in the desert and relaxed in the Meditteranean-like coast, but it has to be said that the scenery here is the most classically beautiful. We arrived in Pucón in the early morning, dropped off some kit at a hostel and decided to head out to Parque Nacional Huerquehue (pronounced "wear-key-wear" - took a bit of time to get that one). Pucón is a nice enough place. OK, it´s tourist central but its pleasant on the eye (it looks a bit like a swiss ski resort), has loads of good accomodation options and is the ... read more

We only really had time to visit one place in Chile besides Santiago, and when you scroll through the lonely planet to decide which tourist saturated place to go next, Pucon definatley was a standout.... After 5 short days in Venezuela at Isla Margarita, living life in the sun and sand, we decided that it was time to crack out the ¨sloppy joes¨ theres some aussie for ya, and head south to colder lands, Chile to be exact. Santiago was great, saw a lot more of it that i did last time, b-dog dragged me to a house of a famous poet whose name escapes me, funnily enough...haha never have been much of a bookworm. Anyway after dinner one night we were taking a stroll to the hostel from the place we ate, with a litre ... read more

We had a 6 hour flight from La Paz to Santiago (the flight went via Arica, where we cleared Chilean customs, and Iquique). Being in Santiago is like being in the US or a big, modern European City. It has order, structure and draught beer - all of which are distinctly lacking in Bolivia. It´s a rather disoreintating feeling being amidst such civilization, so what better way to embrace it than with a couple of ice-cold beers?! The beer in Chile is excellent. If you ask for a Schop you get a pint sized draught lager. This, on average, costs about 90p in Santiago. We had a great few days exploting the city, and even went on a shopping spree and treated ourselves to some new clothes! We went to the zoo, and up a fantastic ... read more

You know other peoples holidays, right? Well they’re like dials that go up to ten on normal amps. Well we've got an amp called the intense-o-meter. Our holiday, right, it goes to eleven in intensity, see?, eleven. And that means that its much more intense? I hear you ask. Well, its one more isn’t it, its not ten, its eleven. So while most people will be holidaying at ten, we’ll be at eleven. (respect to Spinal Tap) It seems like a long time since we blogged… this isn’t intentional, in fact its because my hands have been so cold I can’t type, this is still the case as I sit here in a freezing internet/call centre in a place called Puerto Varas in Chile.
