I spent the last few days in Porto Alegre in Southern Brazil with a friend. Diego was a wonderful host! I couldn't have asked for a better host. My days were spent bike riding through the city, rock climbing next to a stunning waterfall, hiking around the biggest lake in the world, samba dancing, and partying on a farm!

Even though Porto Alegre isn’t much of a touristic city, there were so many things to see and do. And just being with locals was a nice change - a chance to really experience Brazil and see how Brazilians live. One night, I cooked an Indian meal for Diego and his friends. He had been to India a few months ago and had brought back so many spices that it was like being in an Indian store! The next night Diego made a traditional Brazilian meal that was absolutely delicious! It was nice to meet someone who shared my love for food. 😊

On Saturday, we went rock climbing next to a spectacular waterfall near the city of Caxias do Sul. We had to walk behind the waterfall to get to the rock-climbing area. It was stunning! After rock climbing,

we went to a party on a farm hosted by one of Diego’s friends. It was a lot of fun! They had a big bonfire going with popcorn, nuts, cantell (a sweet wine that is served hot), and lots of animals. There were 4 dogs, 2 horses, cats, ducks, roosters, chickens, and even a parrot. It was a wide open space with a lake and orange trees - a really beautiful, tranquil area.

It was a truly fabulous experience - different from seeing just the touristic things and I can't thank Diego and his friends enough. I hope they make it to San Francisco one day so I can return the favor!

Shimaho (I'm not sure how to spell it) is a tea typical of Uruguay, Argentina, and Southern Brazil.
