And so after my little whistlestop Peru side trip, back to Bolivia. After another uncomfortable overnight bus journey, this time back to La Paz, I embarked on a whirlwind of activities and tours with the idea of getting as much out of Bolivia in the shortest possible time... So with Rachael doing some charideee work in Cochabamba, and then visiting Sucre; I have been busy with climbing Bolivias 3rd highest mountain, Huyana Potosi. This is advertised in the backpacker agencies as a "non technical, easy 2 day hike to a 6000m peak". Well, this aint so.. climbing it was one of the hardest things I've ever done. Our hike on day 1 to 5200m was hard work, but straight forward and uneventful. My guide and I had dinner at 5pm, then retired to bed for a ... read more

Right then, after the Caribbean exuberance of Venezuala, and the European austerity of Santiago, it was time to stop arsing about, and get into the REAL South America.. you know; towering Andean mountains, barren plains at dizzying altitudes plunging down to the Amazonian basin and the sultry, sweaty jungle below, Indigenous Indian women with toothless, weather beaten faces, an ill fitting bowler hat and a small child wrapped in a colourful shaw, lllamas, excitable locals who will throw a stike/carnival/fiesta at the drop of a hat, and panpipes.. Oh, the panpipes.. so anyway.. you will find all these things in Bolivia. Arriving in La Paz is spectacular.. a barren plain at over 4000m means you can feel dizzy stepping off the plane, and standing up quickly leaves you light headed.. this plain opens out into a ... read more

Hola from Potosi in Bolivia, the highest city in the world (about 4,100m). We've been quite busy over the last couple of weeks - here's why... In Bonito we spent our last day visiting the Blue Cave (a cave where the water is deep blue). It was then time to find some more wildlife so our tour headed to the Pantanal for 4 nights in luxury accommodation. The Pantanal was fantastic with an amazing array of birds and wildlife all over the place (including green parrots in the tree outside our bedroom window). We explored the dry bits on foot on a guided trek. For the flooded parts we spent a day on horses wading through the metre deep water. Some of the shallower areas we visited on the back of a jeep. And of course, ... read more

Shoot I'm buggered. and yes I did get eaten by a lot of things. At the moment my feet are swollen up even fatter then normal because I got so ravaged by mozzies and sandflies and ants and caterpillas. But the rest of the time I had an absolute blast. It was hard work but well worth it. The first 4days we spent hiking with our backpacks fully laden with food and mosquito-nets and stuff, then we got to rest on days 5 and 6 after we made our raft out of balsa trees. I saw a gang of spider monkeys swinging through the trees above us, an aligator, turtles, heaps of cool birds and butterflies, piranas and other wierd fish with lots of teeth, fresh water sting-rays, fireflies and yes of course, a gizillion mosquitos ... read more

Last night I came up to Rurrenabaque from La Paz on a 15hr overnight bus and the first 5hrs(in daylight) where on "the worst road in the world", and yes it was bad. Rurrenabaque is a really cool town though, it's more of the Bolivia that I was expecting to see and it's actually hot here which is cool. I came here to go into the jungle for a while, so this morning I did a bit of asking around and found a guy who "knows the jungle" - so I talked him into taking me out there for 6days of treking and rafting solong as I pay for all the food and a little bit extra for his time. So thats where I'll be for the next little while - I hope I don´t get ... read more

Shoot what a hardout day!!! I can't even describe how tough the conditions are here, basically it made me realize that I've never even come close to working hard in my life and that these guys are hardnox!!! Thousands and thousands of people have died in this mine over the 70 odd years it's been open through health problems from the acidic air and apsestos down there or by accidents, and now the average life expectancy of a miner is 15yrs, so when some of them are starting at 12/13yrs of age it's not looking good for the population of Potosi. It's a really cool city though, it's just a shame that so many peoples lives are caught up full time in this mine so they can't really enjoy what they have around them.... read more

Well I've just spent the last three days between 4-5000m above sea-level in the back of a dodgy old 4x4 toyota with 3 germans and a couple of Bolivian locals. It was great. Bolivia is really beautiful and would strongly reccomend this trip to everyone. You can start it from San Pedro in Chile or from Uyuni in Bolivia and there are heaps of differant companies that do it. check out these pici's (Pink flamingos are so cool!)... read more

Hola amigos, Well, the last week has been one of the most exciting ever. I'm writing you from Arica, in the far north of Chile, on the border with Peru. (i just realized that this is a little long, oops) Last Saturday we left early morning to catch a flight to Calama, in the Chilean Altiplano (means high plains). Unfortunately our plane had some technical problems so we had to stop in Antofagasta, and take a bus to Calama - pain in the arse. Luckily it was only a 3 hour trip, thru nothing but desert. Spent the night in the little desert town of San Pedro de Atacama, Chile - very cool little place. We found a room in someones home and paid almost nothing for it. They promised us hot water for the shower ... read more
