So I
finally made it into Bolivia. We ended up in Copacabana which is the Bolivian side of Lake Titicaca and meant to be much nicer than Puno. As I may have said in my earlier blog, I skipped Puno for all but the bus station.
After the pretty hectic ride that we had getting to Copa, we all had a pretty chill day and didn´t do anything really exciting. We had the standard day of looking around for the high quality woven llama goods and hunted around for food. We then decided it would be a great idea to climb the hill which would have a great view over the city. The korean girl decided that the tiny little path next to us would be as good as any, we tried to get her to change her mind but she was adamant. So we climbed the hill pretty much vertically by rock climbing, turns out she dosn´t really like climbing, but the rest of us had a great time and were up the hill in no itime. This turned out to be about 3pm in the afternoon, based on what we´d seen yesterday we might as well stick around
for an awesome sunset (raved about in lonely planet). So when 6 pm rolls around we the realise that we´re now in Bolivia and not in Peru and time is one hour ahead, we we waste another hour pretty much just talking smack.
Sunset was great, while we´re settling in to see the sun set, a tame wolf comes by and looks pretty cool. One of the Canadian guys was dead set on getting a good photo with the wolf and the sunset so tries his hardest to position himself between the wold and the sunset. The wolf, in all of his glory seems to be too tame to find food for himself now and just tears into a diaper leaving the whole crowd grossed out. Don´t worry, I got the photos.
The sun set and we went into town, via a much easier walk. I was stopped in my tracks by the
worlds best food´. Think mince, wrapped in mashed potatoe goodness and covered in batter... and then deepfried in front of you and then covered either in salt or hot sauce.... for less than $0.50 NZD. I had 2 and was very satisfied. I was going
to start a new diet based on this new food group but they are not the most common dish straight out of the oil, so I´ve had to pass too often for my liking. (The name of them is papa ros?????somethingsomething I´ve subsequently had rice done the same way, but it´s not worth comparing.)
The next day we did a 17km walk to get to a short stop to the Isle de Sol, the walk was recommended, we then caught a ferry, went to the nearby ruins (which was talked about as good), and walked another 30 mins uphill to try and find a place to sleep. While looking for a place to sleep we were approached by a kid who tried to "help" us find a place to stay. He turned a place that we were told would be 15-20 bolivianos each into 80. The dive he showed us for 20 was a dive, so the four of us split up and we found this awesome place for 15 Bolivianos (you can see the view from the panaoramic.). Yes brother, what is it with me and annoying kids...
From there we slept, woke up for the amazing
sunrise and took a ferry home. The walk made us tired.
We then killed some time, went to get our bags for the short trip to La Paz only couldnçt find the guy from the hostel with the key. So we asked everyone where he was. Meanwhile Içm thinking, who the fuck leaves their hostel empty so that you cançt get any new guests...
We ended up borrowing the keys and grabbed our bags and ran for the bus. I made it on time with my small bag but then, while completly out of breath (altitude is above Mt Cook) tried to explain that I had 3 friends coming really shortly. We made it and were on our way to La Paz... (3-4 hours for $3-4...I love Bolivia!)
I´m hungry, but there might be another catchup after lunch. Today is a bum around day.
