Soccer Stadium
Home of the Boca Juniors. The fanatic fans made the stadium shake. It's a good thing Boca won, I don't want to even guess if they didn't. It was my intentions to do a daily blog of my travels throughout Argentina this past week, but it appears that I failed in that attempt. However, I thought it would be at least apprioriate to share some memories and impressions of my trip.
1. A week is seriously way too short to examine any city, let alone a country. Within in that short amount of time I visited Buenos Aires, Rosario, and Sante Fe (in Argentina); and Montevideo and Punta Del Este ( in Uruguay). There is more to Argentina than Buenos Aires. That was painfully clear everytime I referenced my travel guide. I had imagined that I would see and visit a new city everyday during my trip. But I am glad I didn't. I think that would have stretched my experience. What I did and saw in Argentine was perfect for the amount of time.
2. Things I visited or saw.
Viewed an authentic Argentine soccer (the home team is the Boca Juniors) match with 20,000 plus passionate fans in the cheap seats...couldn't have been more perfect. Thought at times the stadium was collapse due to all the cheering in the stands.
Visited Eva
Eva Peron (Evita) Gravesite
Eva Peron casket lies within this structure. Flowers were placed that morning. Peron (Madonna played her in the movie "Evita") musuem and gravesite. A little freaky but nevertheless fun. The argentine people still love her, which is apparent by the freshly cut flowers hanging off her gravesite.
Visited a Musuem of Stuff Animals in the city of Rosario. I will let your mind work its own magic about this one.
Saw a large hand coming out sand at the beach in Punta Del Este in Uruguay.
Spent time at least five bus terminal. This is more than I have ever in my life. By the way Argentina has an awesome bus system. You can pratically get anywhere in the country at any time by the way of the bus.
For those who ever visited or lived near San Francisco Bay Area would appreciate this. Argentina even has individuals who pretend they are statutes and will move only when tipped. In San Franciso they are located at Fisherman Wharf and Union Square.
3. Random Memories.
The feeling I had when officers approached me when I was buying a soccer ticket from a scalper. "*&%# I going to jail....I've in the country for only 3 hours!"
Waiting
in the soccer stand for 30 minutes after the game ended so that the visitor's fans can leave first, so that a riot does not start. Seriously there were huge armored vehicles outside.
The dry heave noise and coughing I made when one of the buses I rode served hard boil eggs with a sauce I thought be be mayonaise.
Being whistled and chirped at by the lovely ladies of the night in the town of Santa Fe.
Over anxious at every bus terminal wondering if I missed the bus, can't find the bus, or heading to the wrong palce. Sorry Molly!!
Lodging in Santa Fe...foam mattress that curved upward...room the size of a jail cell...hot and humid night with no a/c...10 racks of live baby chicks in the lobby at 3 am. Don't ask why I know this.
Buying uncooked popcorn kernels from a street vendor thinking it was for human consumpation until a little boy told me if was for the pigeon AFTER I tried to eat a few. Did you know that uncooked popcorn kernels are hard?
Bicycle breaking down in Uruguary when I am at least 10 miles away from
Santa Fe, Argentina Lodging
Molly and her sister Amy. The sketchy room. the rental counter. A young teenage Uruguary girl drove me back. She asked me questions about american pop culture. I pretended to know a lot. I think I impressed her. In joking, I told her about an up and coming band...Nelson...to look for their music. I really think she will.
Singing Madonna, Pink, U2 songs at Moby Dick's, a bar in Uruguay at 2 am.
The first time I thought in spanish, when an Argentine man "accidently" open the bathroom door, and I yelled out "Un momento."
The way a bathroom attendant hold you "hostage" to buying toilet paper.
The last meal I had before departing for the states. Went to La Cabrera, a steak house in Buenos Aires. Order Bife a Chorizo Americano. The steak was literally 12 inches by 6 inches. Ate about a third of it. Washed it down with a glass of red wine. Got the bill for 32 peso (about $10-11).
4. Lasting Impressions. Awesome place to visit. Great Country..Great experience. Would love to visit it again. Extremely jealous that my friend Molly (copy and paste this link if you would like to read her blog: http://www.travelblog.org/fred.php?id=94077 ) is
continuing her adventure.
