In the weeks before coming to Argentina, Iguazu Falls was a big subject of debate. Eva really wanted to see them; I wasn't sure if I wanted to go out of my way just for falling water. Eva won the debate. Not only that, but as she talked about them, I was surprised to remember that I had heard of them before. Some of you may recall the 1988 historical movie, "The Mission," about a Jesuit mission amongst South American Indians. Do you recall the opening scene in the movie when the priest, strapped to a cross, was sent over a waterfall by unrepentant natives? That scene was set at Iguazu. Although the movie was fictional, there were in fact several Jesuit reductions, settlements for "educating" the indigenous people, operating near the Iguazu Falls area in ... read more

Misiones Province - Christians and American Indians fight against Europe The region of Misiones in north east Argentina is most well known for the waterfalls of Iguazu - a river over a mile wide falling several hundred metres into the basin of the valley below. The area is sub-tropical rain forest on the border with Brasil, and contains an extraordinary variety of animal life - butterflies, monkeys, birds of prey, lizards. OVer 400 species can be found in the national park around the falls. Much less well known, however, is the history of the Jesuit missions which were built in the region - and the impact they had on the lives of the Guarani Indians in the years of the Spanish conquest. In the years between 1625 and 1767, thirty of these missions were built in ... read more

Misiones is a region of red sand, palm trees and hot hot heat. Everyone takes a bus through it to see the world renowned and mightily touristy Iguazú falls, which i decided not to do. Instead i headed for San Ignacio (not exactly non touristy, i admit, but at least not disneyland), known for its ruins of Jesuit missions. Nearby, there's more ruins at Santa Ana, which i visited with the ticket of a friendly frenchman. There's not a lot left of the missions: the outline of the town is still visible, some impressive walls stand and the stairs of the old cabildo are very nice. The most impressive part - to this man - was the old graveyard: Almost all the graves had collapsed, showing open holes leading into the dark ground. The mausoleums had ... read more

From Iguazu falls we followed the Parana river, which forms the border between Paraguay and Argentina, to the small town of San Ignacio. Along with old pick-up trucks and dirt roads the town also has the restored ruins of a Jesuit mission, abandoned and lost to the jungle in 1798. The restoration had cleared the trees and rebuilt most of the buildings with the original stone. It clearly showed how the settlement would have been back then, when 4000 indigenous people moved from the jungle to live with the Jesuit priests and farm the land. We visited 2 other ruined missions in the area. Neither had seen the level of restoration that San Ignacio had but the collapsed building, overgrown with trees, were still visible. We felt like explorers rediscovering the lost sites and by using ... read more

A little history...the Jesuits (Spain's religious force) came to South America in 1609 to "teach" the native tribes a better Christian way and left in 1767 leaving their buildings behind them. San Ignacio Mini is the best preserved of these and this is where we headed for this morning. Whilst at the bus terminal we tried to obtain tickets for the potentially most tricky part of our journey, the trip to Salto in Uruguay and as we have been reading there are only journeys that arrive in Concordia (on the Argentinian side of the border) at 1am in the town centre or 6am on the outskirts of town. Sadly we are yet to hear back from a hotel in Concordia so this could prove to be a bit of a problem. Leaving this for later pondering ... read more

We got up early, ate breakfast, packed lunch and headed out to the ‘Piedras Preciosas’ mines of Wanda (yes, a town called Wanda). Our tour guide was fairly informative but I really had to probe to get him to spill the beans on where most of the real mining gets done. There was only one miner in the cave we went into, so we knew there must be some other mines hidden. He said they were in the jungle, but all the miners were on a Tereré break (a cold form of maté). We let it go at that, tipped the guide, and went in to look at the very shiny, overpriced gift shop. They had some geodes for sale that were taller than me (yeah, make your short jokes)! A side trip through the small ... read more

Arriving in Argentina and heading to Salta by bus from the Chilean border proved to be quite a deserted affair. Besides the moderate mountains and the 4 metre high cacti, it was pretty average scenery following our previous few weeks. It was also not helped by the fact that we were presented with ham and cheese sandwiches for breakfast, elevenses and lunch! It got better though...towards the end of our journey the exposed rock faces blended into rainbows of different colours. Dark reds colours were adjacent to bright greens and gunmetal greys, caused by different minerals within. It was also evident how much wealthier the country was comparitively as almost every house was brick, had a satelite dish, and 4x4 outside...and the buses are first world! We were now consistently at lower altitude and the weather ... read more

First of all, apologies for the multiple entries - been a bit too busy for all this computer geek malarkey, plus someone broke the PC at the last hostel... Also I'm once again in a cafe with no USB ports, so can't upload any more photos of waterfalls which I'm sure will disappoint you all. Anyway, from where I left off, we travelled for 5 or so hours to San Ignacio. The weather by this point was just like back home - bloody miserable. The point of visiting SI was to go to the Jesuit Ruins, which we did. I'm still not sure who the Jesuits were, but they do have some very nice ruins, though I think I managed to break part of them. After this little excursion, we made a group decision to press ... read more
