Some people say that there is no variety in the food available in Buenos Aires. We beg to differ, although there is an imbalance in favour of parrilla restaurants offering grilled meat and little else. Street food is pretty good if you like popcorn or roasted peanuts, but a choripan (chorizo sausage in a bread roll) is a MUST for anyone, and a spicy chimichurri (a spice dressing - be careful, it has a habit of dripping over your clothes!!) caps it off nicely.
Tenedor Libre buffet restaurants are all over the place. We found them a great place to stock up on salad at lunchtime and ensuring a good dose of goodness if you are going to have an unhealthy evening! They vary from really cheap (Miami Sol on Esmeraelda) through reasonable (Baires Libre on Carlos Pellegrini) to expensive (The Grants, Av Las Heras or Rioamba) but you do get what you pay for in the more expensive ones!
If proper restaurants are your thing, here are a few of our favourites. Most of the links go to a restaurant review website where you can find the addresses. They are in no particular order.
L’ecole. Fabulous and
La Chola
Steak, locro, lentejas (lentils), everything is superb. not too expensive. Up there with the best of them. A fantastic set 3 course menu for 34 pesos including a bottle of wine between two.
Sarkis. Fantastic Middle Eastern and Arabic food. The humus is really to die for, but try the Persian Rice if you go.
Cabaña Las Lilas. Expensive but if you are celebrating something special it is worth it. Feel like VIPs for the night! That’s where we celebrated Trish’s birthday last year.
Mykonos. Fancy Greek? You can even smash plates (the only reason Mario liked going so much, we think!). A bit pricey for the average backpacker but superb moussaka!
Palitos. BA’s Chinatown isn’t huge, in fact it’s one street, but we like Palitos.
Bangalore. Fancy a curry and a beer in an English style pub? Ask for the vindaloo to be really spicy if you like hot curries otherwise it is simply just tasty! The local stout is a great substitute for Guinness and at a terrific price!!
Las Cholas. A favourite parrilla restaurant in Las Canitas. They have a sister restaurant downtown.
El Bagual. A cheap parrilla but not lacking in quality or friendliness. They do a fantastic veggie parrilla
El Bagual
Meat eaters and veggies alike will love this place if you are vegetarian or just fancy a break from all the meat.
La Ochava. A good option in Las Canitas where you get a fabulous salad bar with every main course.

There's Mark, Abbey and Natalie! Those were great times... breaking bread with friends. Shall we schedule a reunion? Thanks, Russ, for including that pic, and also the one with Mario and the broken plate.
