Tuesday 6 December ........... After breakfast we walked to the Recoleta Cemetery where Ava Peron is buried. The cemetery had many elaborate structures and crypts to accommodate their family remains (quite morbid really), families who were either well off or famous. From the cemetary we went to wait for on off bus at a recgonised bus stop, however the bus never came, seems they changed the route but never removed the stop, after missing two buses we finally went to another stop and decided to visit the fine arts museum where we saw works by Rodin, Van Gough. We finally caught the on off bus to La Boca, to watch some street performers dancing the Tango. We sat in front of a run down bar with an elevated stage drinking beer admiring the dancers and the ... read more

Pretty Little Chascomus The next stop is a brief stay at the small town of Chascomus in La Pamapa, just to get away from the hustle and bustle of Buenos Aires city and get a brief look into life that's a bit more rural. Collection from the bus stop is provided by one of our hosts with the brief ride set to the music of 'Never Ending Story' blasting out on the car stereo. The next place to stay is by Chascomus lake and is very beautiful - the little set of rooms being two minutes walk from the large lake. Carolina and her husband are very welcoming - they're relocated to Chascomus to get away from a Buenos Aires which they say is getting very overcrowded and busy these days. Chascomus couldn't be more removed ... read more

Street Corners 2 Lestra / Juarez Chascomus (Argentina) 16 November 2009 15:21 I sat at the base of a tree in the wide leafy boulevard which led down to the laguna in Chascomus. A hundred kilometres or so south of Buenos Aires, and set on the edge of the pampas, this town developed with the rise of the beef industry and the gaucho culture which came with it. Still an agricultural cente, the town now shows evidence of newer farming methods: tractor repair workshops, machine part dealerships, various allotments and small-holdings. Looking down at me from the centre of the road, set up on the grassy verge between the two carriageways, stares the white bust of Sr Lestra, after whom the street was named. Behind some trees on the far side of the road, there is ... read more

Hoo-wee, this is one pretty town! Chascomús got very well preserved, and most of this buildings date from the 19th and early 20th century. It looks quite a lot like your typical western film, even though it's a lot calmer, and in some places far more monumental. The main square is very impressive, and whereever you go from there, fine buildings will come your way, like the beautiful train station. I spent my first day here hanging around, socialising with the locals and watching the documentary 'La Ultima Estacion' in the town hall. The movie was pretty shabbily made, but it gave a very striking view of the downfall of Argentina's railway system - the main cause being privatization (surprise!). Villages got abandoned because of train services ending, and of course - as always - everything ... read more

We decided to spend our wedding anniversary weekend up in Gualeguaychu. Unfortunately there was a mass protest taking place against the proposed paper mills over the river in Uruguay. That meant we couldn't get a room in the hotel we wanted to stay in. Never mind, onto Plan B! 2 hours away from BA on the bus is the beautiful town of Chascomus. Our dreams of a tranquil relaxing weekend seemed thwarted again at Retiro as we couldn't get onto any of the buses we wanted to. Instead we ended up travelling in the evening amid torrential rain and amazing lightning flashes in the sky. We weren't really sure if that boded well or not! We got to Chascomus at about 9.30, or rather we got to km122 on the Mar Del Plata road where the ... read more
