jo - Holy Names Academy at 728 21st Ave East.

This award winning girls’ school was founded by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary on November 9, 1880. Construction of the present Academy was completed in 1908. The auditorium was completed in 1909, the chapel in 1925, the music department in 1929, & the underground tunnel, now used for locker space, in 1948. The school’s elevator, installed in 1931 & one of the oldest in Seattle, was renovated in 2004. The Academy’s imposing neo-classical architecture has been carefully preserved over the years with few exterior changes except for the removal of the north tower sometime after a 1965 earthquake. The new gym, added in 1990, closely resembles the original building. More info: http://www.holynames-sea.org/About/
